Qualifications

  • Experience with boiler making, pipe fabrication, and valve manufacturing preferred.

Job description

Welding Supervisor position available in Johannesburg.

Seeking a Welding Supervisor to perform all the duties and responsibilities related to the production and manufacturing activities in the Welding and Fabrication department of the company.

To carry out and execute all related tasks required in the department. To supervise the team for efficient production and manufacturing operations of the department. To enforce the company policies and procedures in the department

Salary: R120 – R125 Hourly.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that the fabrication department is always functioning and operating effectively and efficiently to meet production demands.
  • Oversee and ensure all welding procedures and specifications are followed and adhered to.
  • Plan, organise, supervise, delegate, and manage the welding team to be efficient and to meet priority demands.
  • Prioritise projects and associated job requirements to meet production demands.
  • Manage the daily PPE and consumable requirements in the fabrication department, to maintain optimum efficiency.
  • Oversee and ensure machines are set to correct Amps and Volts settings as per the welding procedure, before use.
  • Oversee and ensure the use of appropriate welding machines, gases and consumables to carry out welds.
  • Oversee and ensure all welding pieces and components are handled with caution to prevent damage.
  • Oversee and ensure no welding is carried out on Stainless steel machined components, unless otherwise stated.
  • Oversee and ensure the required weld bead widths and diameters are carried out on welds.
  • Oversee and ensure proper care is taken when handling flanges, valves, pipes, fitting, and components.
  • Oversee and ensure correct use of welding tools and equipment
  • Read and understand drawings, weld maps, technical markings, work instructions and all job- related requirements to carry out production tasks correctly and effectively.
  • Ensure that the correct materials and fittings are used, as per drawings.
  • Carry out sandblasting and material preparations for weld jobs.
  • Carry out cutting, grinding, and bevelling of pipes, plates and structural materials correctly, according to drawing dimensions.
  • Carry out plate rolling and pipe bending as required.
  • Carry out proper fit up and preparations on welding jobs.
  • Carry out tack welding on pipes, valve components, flanges and structural steels to be done properly to avoid porosity and defects for welders.
  • Prepare test welds to assess the quality and correct weld size of welds before welding on the job.
  • Inspect and measure pre-machined jobs that requires weld cladding to ensure the correct amount of welding is produced.
  • Ensure regular use of Anti-Spatter on all machined surfaces to prevent arc spatters on machined surfaced that are not to be welded.
  • Maintain the correct use of welding gasses and welding consumables.
  • Cleaning and grinding of all weld spatters, arc strikes and welds where necessary to maintain correct and visually acceptable welds.
  • Pre-inspect, organise, and arrange weld jobs for QC inspection and release.
  • Assist welders with assembling of valves, flanges, and piping systems.
  • Carry out daily inspection on the condition of welding equipment before use.
  • Monitor proper functioning and operation of the welding equipment before, during, and after use.
  • Regularly check and ensure maintenance is conducted on welding equipment to ensure good working condition at all times.
  • Maintain correct use of PPE and safety equipment in the fabrication department.
  • Ensure the fabrication department is always sorted, clean and kept well organised.
  • General housekeeping of welding shop and fabrication area.
  • Any other ad-hoc tasks that may be required from time to time

Requirements:

  • Matric / Grade 12.
  • Qualified Boilermaker / Pipe Fitter with trade test.
  • 5 years minimum working experience in metal fabrication industry.
  • Experience with boiler making and pipe fabrication is a must.
  • Experience with valve manufacturing will be an added advantage.
  • Experience with any other Engineering industry will be an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of ASME, AWS, AS/NZA codes and welding procedures.
  • Knowledge of SMAW, MMAW, GMAW, and GTAW welding processes.
  • Knowledge of Acetylene welding, Brazing, and Gouging.
  • Knowledge of Flame cutting and Plasma cutting.
  • Knowledge of welding machines, tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of welding consumables for different material types.
  • Knowledge of material grades, steel, pipes, mild steels, carbon steels, and stainless steels.
  • Knowledge of plate rolling, pipe fitting and bending.
  • Must have a valid driver’s licence.
  • Ability to operate a forklift will be an added advantage.
  • Must be willing to work day/night shifts and overtime as required.
  • Own reliable transport will be an added advantage.
  • The job requires a physically strong, fit and healthy individual, who is able to handle heavy steel materials.
