Job summary

The role requires enrolled nurse qualification and current SANC registration, with experience in theatre or sterile techniques preferred. Shift work including weekends may apply.

Responsibilities

Overview

Mediclinic is seeking a skilled and dedicated Theatre Enrolled Nurse to support the delivery of safe, quality patient care within the operating theatre environment. The role involves assisting in surgical procedures, maintaining a sterile field, and ensuring patient safety before, during, and after surgery in line with Mediclinic standards and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

• Provide direct nursing care to patients in the theatre environment in accordance with scope of practice
• Assist in preparing patients for surgical procedures (pre-operative care)
• Monitor patients’ vital signs and condition throughout procedures under supervision
• Support post-operative patient recovery in the theatre or recovery room

Theatre Assistance

• Assist surgeons, anaesthetists, and registered nurses during surgical procedures
• Prepare and maintain the sterile field and surgical instruments
• Ensure correct surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment are available and functioning
• Handle and account for surgical instruments and swabs according to protocol

Clinical Compliance & Safety

• Adhere to infection prevention and control standards at all times
• Maintain patient confidentiality and uphold ethical standards
• Ensure compliance with Mediclinic policies, the Nursing Act, and SANC regulations
• Participate in patient safety initiatives and risk management processes

Administrative & Operational Support

• Accurately document patient care and theatre activities
• Assist in stock control, ordering, and cost-effective use of resources
• Maintain cleanliness and readiness of the theatre environment
• Participate in shift handovers and multidisciplinary team communication

Continuous Improvement

• Participate in in-service training and professional development
• Contribute to quality improvement initiatives within the theatre unit
• Stay updated on best practices in perioperative nursing care

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

• Enrolled Nurse qualification
• Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC)

Experience

• Proven experience in a theatre/operating room environment (preferred)
• Exposure to surgical procedures and sterile techniques
