Job summary

Durban University of Technology invites applications for a Technician in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering. A Bachelor's degree in Electronic and/or Computer Engineering (NQF 7) and at least 3 years of technical experience are required, including hardware/software maintenance and networking.

You will support academic staff in running student practical sessions, repair equipment, and maintain a small computer network.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electronic and/or Computer Engineering (NQF 7) or closely related field.
• At least 3 years technical/industrial experience.
• Experience with electronic hardware and/or computer hardware/software maintenance.
• Knowledge of Python, MATLAB, and Embedded C Programming.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and implement the effective operation, administration and maintenance of designated laboratories in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering.
• Support academic staff in the running of student practical sessions.
• Repair basic electronic test and computer equipment.
• Maintain software and hardware on a small computer network running high‑level software applications.
• Communicate effectively in English, both written and verbal.
• Plan and schedule work, manage resources and multi‑task to meet deadlines.
• Place orders for new equipment and maintain an asset register.
• Plan, implement and monitor laboratory safety measures.

TECHNICIAN

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent technical qualification in Electronic and /or Computer Engineering. (NQF 7) or closely related field.
• At least 3 years technical/industrial experience.
• Experience with electronic hardware and/or computer hardware/software maintenance, as well as working knowledge of software such as Python, MATLAB, and Embedded C Programming.
• Must have knowledge and experience in computer networking, hardware repair, operating systems, and specialized software such as MATLAB and Multisim.

Recommendations

• Experience with function generators, oscilloscopes and general electronic test equipment.
• Working knowledge of CAD, 3D printing and PCB fabrication.

Summary of Duties

• To coordinate and implement the effective operation, administration and maintenance of designated laboratories in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering.
• To support academic staff in the running of student practical sessions.
• Must be competent in the repair of basic electronic test and computer equipment.
• Must be able to maintain software and hardware on a small computer network running high-level software applications.
• Must have good communication skills -written and verbal in English.
• Must be able to work independently and achieve results on time.
• Must be able to plan and schedule work efforts, including management of resources, and to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
• - Place orders for new equipment and maintain an accurate asset register
• Must be aware of, plan, and implement safety measures within a laboratory environment.
