Qualifications

• Bachelor-level qualification in technical theatre/production relevant fields.
• 8+ years of progressive experience in technical direction or production management for live performances, theatre or large-scale events.
• Proven expertise in lighting design/operation (ETC, MA Lighting), sound design/ reinforcement, video projection mapping, and automation systems.

Responsibilities

About the Role

Our client, a leading innovator in live entertainment production based in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, ZA, is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Technical Director to oversee all aspects of technological implementation for their groundbreaking performances. This role requires a hands-on individual with a deep understanding of stagecraft, audiovisual systems, lighting, and automation. You will be responsible for ensuring the seamless and spectacular execution of complex technical elements that bring artistic visions to life. This is a permanent, on-site position in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, ZA, demanding meticulous planning, execution, and problem-solving under pressure. You will collaborate closely with creative teams, production managers, and external vendors to deliver unforgettable live experiences that push the boundaries of technology and artistry.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the technical planning, design, and execution of all live performance productions.
• Manage and oversee all technical departments, including lighting, sound, video, stage mechanics, and special effects.
• Develop detailed technical specifications, drawings, and schematics.
• Source, procure, and manage all technical equipment, ensuring it meets project requirements and budget constraints.
• Supervise installation, setup, and operation of all technical systems.
• Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and protocols on site.
• Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues that arise during rehearsals and performances.
• Collaborate with directors, designers, and choreographers to realize their creative visions through technology.
• Manage technical budgets, including forecasting, tracking, and reporting expenses.
• Oversee the maintenance and repair of all technical equipment.
• Recruit, train, and manage technical crews and freelancers.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Technical Theatre, Electrical Engineering, Production Management, or a related field.
• Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in technical direction or production management for live performances, theatre, or large-scale events.
• Proven expertise in lighting design and operation (ETC, MA Lighting), sound design and reinforcement (digital consoles, line arrays), video projection mapping, and automation systems.
• Strong understanding of electrical systems, rigging, and stage machinery.
• Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Vectorworks) for technical drawings.
• Excellent leadership, project management, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities in a demanding live environment.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with diverse teams.
• Willingness to travel and work irregular hours, including nights and weekends, as dictated by production schedules.
• Must be based in or willing to relocate to Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, ZA.
