Job summary

Cbtalents seeks a Stevedore Foreman for a Mozambique LNG project based in Afungi, Cabo Delgado. You will lead stevedoring teams during vessel loading, discharge and quay cargo handling, coordinating personnel and equipment to ensure safe, efficient operations.

You must communicate in Portuguese and English, supervise teams, ensure compliance with method statements and risk assessments, and provide clear shift handovers. Rotation is 75 days on / 21 days off, with day or night shifts as scheduled.

Qualifications

  • Fluent in Portuguese and English, spoken and written.
  • Experience supervising stevedoring or port cargo-handling teams.
  • Experience supporting construction projects or handling project cargo in a port or marine terminal.
  • Practical knowledge of rigging, lifting accessories, signalling and safe cargo-handling practices.
  • Ability to interpret cargo lists, loading/discharge plans and operational instructions.
  • Experience delivering toolbox talks and implementing risk assessments and method statements.
  • Strong team leadership, coordination and reporting skills.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily stevedoring activities, allocating duties and resources according to the shift plan.
  • Conduct pre-shift briefings and toolbox talks in Portuguese and English, ensuring workers understand their tasks, hazards and controls.
  • Coordinate vessel and quayside activities with vessel representatives, lifting teams, equipment operators and cargo tally personnel.
  • Confirm that work areas, access routes and cargo landing areas are prepared before operations begin.
  • Verify that personnel are competent and authorised for their assigned tasks.
  • Ensure cargo handling follows approved method statements, risk assessments and lifting plans.
  • Coordinate riggers and banksmen with the designated lifting supervisor, maintaining clear communication throughout operations.
  • Check that lifting accessories are inspected, correctly identified and suitable for the assigned task; remove defective items from service.
  • Monitor cargo identification, condition, tallying and handover, reporting damage or discrepancies promptly.
  • Coordinate cargo transfer to transport and laydown teams, maintaining safe traffic flow and segregation of pedestrians.
  • Monitor weather, visibility and operational conditions, stopping work when conditions become unsafe.
  • Maintain shift records covering cargo handled, personnel and equipment deployed, delays, incidents and outstanding work.
  • Provide clear shift handovers and follow up on operational and HSE corrective actions.

Job Description — Stevedore Foreman

Project: Mozambique LNG
Location: Afungi, Cabo Delgado, Mozambique
Reports to: Stevedoring Superintendent / Operations Manager
Rotation: 75 days on / 21 days off

Role Purpose

Lead stevedoring teams during vessel loading, discharge and quayside cargo handling. The Stevedore Foreman will coordinate personnel and equipment to ensure operations are conducted safely, efficiently and in accordance with approved work plans and project requirements.

Essential Requirements
  • Fluent in both Portuguese and English, spoken and written, with the ability to communicate clearly with multinational teams.
  • Previous experience supervising stevedoring or port cargo-handling teams, including vessel loading and discharge.
  • Experience supporting construction projects or handling project cargo in a port, marine terminal or comparable environment.
  • Practical knowledge of rigging, lifting accessories, signalling, cargo securing and safe cargo-handling practices.
  • Ability to interpret cargo lists, loading/discharge plans and operational instructions.
  • Experience delivering toolbox talks and implementing risk assessments and method statements.
  • Strong team leadership, coordination and reporting skills.
  • Ability to identify unsafe conditions, stop unsafe work and elevate concerns.
  • Willingness to work on site in Afungi on a 75-day on / 21-day off rotation, including day or night shifts as scheduled.
Desirable Requirements
  • Previous oil and gas or LNG project experience is an advantage.
  • Experience handling breakbulk cargo, containers, steelwork, pipes and heavy or oversized cargo.
  • Recognised training in rigging, banksman/signaller duties or lifting supervision.
  • Experience working on large projects involving multiple contractors.
  • First aid, firefighting or emergency response training.
