Placements24 is recruiting a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for our client in Vereeniging, Gauteng. You will lead design projects for heavy industrial equipment, perform complex analyses, and ensure robust, manufacturable systems. The role requires extensive CAD/FEA proficiency and a strong materials background.

You will mentor junior engineers, collaborate closely with production, and drive designs from concept through validation in a fast-paced, safety-conscious environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering required; Master's preferred.
• 7+ years' experience in mechanical design for heavy industrial equipment.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Inventor) and FEA tools (ANSYS, Abaqus).
• Strong knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes (machining, casting, fabrication), and standards.
• Proven ability to manage projects from concept to completion.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving and leadership skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of complex mechanical systems for heavy industrial machinery.
• Perform advanced engineering calculations including stress, strain, thermal and vibration analyses using FEA.
• Create and optimize 3D models and 2D drawings using SolidWorks or equivalent CAD tools.
• Specify materials and components to meet performance and durability requirements.
• Oversee prototyping, testing and validation of new designs.
• Collaborate with manufacturing to ensure producibility and cost-effectiveness.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and designers.
• Troubleshoot design issues and implement effective solutions.
• Stay updated on industry trends and new technologies.
• Prepare technical reports and present proposals to management.
