Job summary

GE Vernova South Africa (Pty) Ltd seeks an EHS Officer to support the Outage Manager in implementing and maintaining the Outage EHS Plan and EHS Management System. You will supervise site activities to ensure compliance with Life Saving Rules and related guidelines, driving safety across the outage execution.

The role requires field presence (minimum 80%), strong facilitation and communication skills, and a track record in hazard identification, risk assessment, and incident investigations.

Qualifications

• National Diploma or Certificate in Safety Management from an accredited institution.
• OH&S Act and Regulations Certification is required.
• COID Act Certification is required.
• First Aid Certificate Level 1 is required.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Outage Manager to develop the Daily Outage Report and update the display board.
• Carry out site inspections, focusing on fieldwork for safety compliance.
• Act immediately on unsafe acts and conditions observed at site.
• Ensure compliance with GE Vernova Life Saving Rules and EHS plans.
• Support site disciplinary procedures and zero tolerance policies.
• Provide safety advice to site personnel to prevent harm or damage.
• Liaise with site staff to report deviations and follow up on closure.
• Lead by example in complying with site EHS rules.
• Review risk assessments and method statements for activities under supervision.
• Participate in incident investigations and ensure corrective actions are implemented.

Job Description Summary

Provide support to the Outage Manager in the implementation and maintenance of the Outage EHS (Environment Health & Safety) Plan and EHS (Environment Health & Safety) Management System. Supervise site activities to ensure that the defined Outage EHS (Environment Health & Safety) rules are complied with.

Job Description Key Responsibilities

• Assist the Outage Manager/ Site Leader to develop the Daily Outage Report and update the daily management display board.
• Carry out continuous inspections of the site areas (minimum 80 % of the time in the field), treat and report any discrepancy.
• Act immediately on unsafe acts and conditions observed at site
• Assist the Outage Manager/Site Leader in ensuring compliance of site activities with the GE Vernova Life Saving Rules, DIR-057, Outage Specific EHS (Environment Health & Safety) Plan, guidelines and work instructions.
• Support compliance with the site disciplinary procedure and zero tolerance policy.
• Provide support and advice to site personnel as to prevent harm or damage to people, equipment and the environment
• Liaise with site staff to have deviations reported and follow up on closure
• Lead by example in complying with the site EHS (Environment Health & Safety) rules.
• Review Risk Assessments and Method Statement for all activities in area of responsibility
• Participate in incident investigations and review incident documentation for completeness, that correct information is captured and that sustainable measures are implemented to prevent re-occurrence
• Carry out any other specific task or duty defined by the Site Leader to support the implementation and maintenance of the site EHS (Environment Health & Safety) Management System.
• Present/attend daily toolbox talks
• Actively participate in the development of Point of Work Risk Assessments.
• Full compliance with GEV Life Saving Rules, SP DIR-0057 and site requirements verified through field audits
• Deviation reports / Outage EHS (Environment Health & Safety) Reports

Required Qualifications

• National Diploma or Certificate in Safety Management or Environmental Health from an accredited institution or college.
• Minimum 3 years experience as SACPCMP (South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions as a Registered CHSO (Construction Health Safety Officer) in Power Station.
• A recognized safety certification (minimum: of 2 weeks training) (e.g. SAMTRAC / Modern SHEQ Management course)
• OH&S (Occupational Health and Safety) Act and Regulations Certification
• COID (Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases) Act Certification
• First Aid training Certificate level 1

• OH&S Act and Regulations: latest version of the Act and regulations
• COID Act: latest version of the Act.
• Incident Investigation and Root Cause Analysis Technique; Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment Training; Health & Safety Auditing; Environmental Compliance Recognized Course;
• Emergency Preparedness Coordination Training Fire equipment inspector training certificate
• First Aid training Certificate (preference is level 2 First Aid)
• Shall be registered with Statutory Body, SACPCMP, as CHSO or CHSM
• Good level of English language (both written and spoken)
• Strong facilitation skills.
• Interpersonal, supportive and responsive skill
• Demonstrated team management ability in matrix environment.
• Good listening skills
