Job summary

Jobs 4 All seeks an experienced SHEQ Manager to lead the site’s safety, quality and environmental programs in a plastics manufacturing setting. You will drive compliance with ISO and FSSC, oversee audits, and manage incident investigations.

You will develop training programs, mentor teams, and implement continuous improvement across risk, quality and environmental controls to protect workers and the plant.

Qualifications

• Matric / Grade 12 is required.
• Relevant tertiary qualification in Safety Management, Risk Management, Compliance Management or related field.
• Industrial Engineering qualification is advantageous.
• Minimum 5 years SHEQ management experience in a manufacturing environment.
• Experience in plastics manufacturing is highly advantageous.
• Fluent in Afrikaans and English (written and verbal).
• Strong knowledge of ISO Management Systems, FSSC standards and relevant legislation.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office; strong leadership and people management skills.

Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, maintain and continuously improve the organisation's integrated SHEQ Management System.
• Maintain ISO and FSSC certifications and ensure regulatory compliance.
• Coordinate internal and external SHEQ audits and address findings within required timelines.
• Oversee Quality Control and ensure testing of materials, products and processes meets requirements.
• Identify, assess and mitigate SHEQ risks across site operations.
• Lead incident reporting, investigation, and corrective actions.
• Develop disaster management and emergency preparedness plans; coordinate drills.
• Manage contractor and supplier oversight and their compliance.

Minimum Requirements

Regulatory Compliance & Certifications

• Develop, implement, maintain and continuously improve the organisation's integrated SHEQ Management System.
• Maintain and secure required ISO and FSSC certifications.
• Ensure that all site activities comply with applicable environmental legislation, occupational health and safety legislation, regulatory requirements and company policies.
• Monitor changes in legislation and industry standards and ensure that operational processes remain compliant.
• Coordinate internal and external SHEQ audits and ensure that all findings are addressed within required timeframes.
• Maintain accurate compliance records, certification documentation and supporting evidence.

Quality Assurance & Testing

• Oversee the Quality Control Department and ensure that all quality processes are effectively implemented and maintained.
• Ensure rigorous testing and inspection of raw materials, work-in-progress materials and finished plastic products.
• Monitor and control product specifications to ensure compliance with customer, regulatory and internal quality requirements.
• Review and analyse laboratory and quality-control data.
• Identify quality trends, deviations and recurring production issues.
• Implement corrective and preventative measures to minimise production errors, product defects and customer complaints.
• Ensure testing equipment is correctly maintained, calibrated and used in accordance with approved procedures.
• Maintain all required quality documentation and records.

Risk & Hazard Mitigation

• Identify, evaluate and manage SHEQ risks throughout site operations.
• Monitor daily production activities for potential health, safety, environmental and operational hazards.
• Conduct workplace inspections, site audits and formal risk assessments.
• Ensure appropriate corrective and preventative actions are implemented following identified risks or non-conformances.
• Develop and maintain comprehensive disaster management, emergency preparedness and loss-prevention plans.
• Coordinate emergency drills and evaluate site preparedness.
• Implement practical risk-reduction initiatives across production and operational areas.
• Monitor the effectiveness of risk controls and continually improve mitigation measures.

Incident Management & Reporting

• Manage the reporting, recording and investigation of workplace accidents, incidents, near misses and other adverse events.
• Ensure serious incidents are escalated appropriately to Senior Management and relevant regulatory authorities where required.
• Conduct root-cause investigations and implement corrective and preventative actions.
• Monitor daily production outputs and operational activities for potential SHEQ concerns.
• Analyse incident trends and identify areas requiring intervention or improvement.
• Maintain accurate incident registers, investigation reports and supporting documentation.

Environmental Management

• Develop, implement and maintain effective environmental management systems.
• Ensure compliance with applicable environmental legislation and permit requirements.
• Monitor waste management, emissions, chemical handling and other environmental risks.
• Identify opportunities to reduce environmental impact and improve resource efficiency.
• Implement corrective measures where environmental risks or non-compliance are identified.
• Promote environmental awareness throughout the organisation.

Contractor & Supplier Oversight

• Manage and enforce strict SHEQ compliance requirements for all contractors, service providers and relevant suppliers operating on or supplying the site.
• Ensure required contractor documentation is valid and up to date before work commences.
• Manage compliance documentation including:
  • GMR 2(7) / 32.7 agreements, where applicable.
  • Letters of Good Standing.
  • Medical fitness records and certificates.
  • Contractor safety files.
  • Risk assessments and method statements.
  • Permits to work.
• Verify compliance of chemical suppliers and ensure required safety documentation is available.
• Monitor the compliance and suitability of PPE suppliers and supplied equipment.
• Conduct contractor and supplier audits where necessary.
• Address and elevate contractor non-compliance.

Training & Strategic Communication

• Develop and implement a site-wide SHEQ communication and awareness strategy.
• Promote a positive safety, quality and compliance culture across all levels of the organisation.
• Develop and deliver SHEQ training, awareness sessions and specialist coaching.
• Ensure employees understand relevant policies, procedures, work instructions and statutory requirements.
• Ensure Quality Control and Safety teams receive appropriate technical and operational training.
• Ensure staff are trained in the correct use of testing equipment and equipment calibration requirements.
• Coordinate toolbox talks, refresher training and compliance awareness programmes.
• Maintain accurate training records and monitor employee competency.

Continuous Improvement

• Drive SHEQ continuous improvement programmes across the organisation.
• Analyse trends in safety incidents, quality defects, audit findings and environmental performance.
• Identify opportunities to improve processes, systems and operational controls.
• Implement preventative actions aimed at reducing incidents, non-conformances, production losses and quality failures.
• Establish and monitor SHEQ performance indicators.
• Prepare regular SHEQ reports for the General Manager and Senior Management.
• Provide recommendations based on SHEQ performance trends and identified risks.

Team Leadership & Management

• Lead, manage, coach and develop the Quality Control and SHE teams.
• Establish clear performance standards, responsibilities and objectives.
• Monitor team performance and ensure accountability.
• Ensure adequate staffing, training and competency within the SHEQ function.
• Promote collaboration between SHEQ, Production, Maintenance and other operational departments.
• Provide professional guidance to management and employees on all SHEQ-related matters.
