Job summary

Hatch in Johannesburg is seeking a Shaft Structural Engineer to lead the design and execution of surface and underground mining infrastructure projects within the Mining Sector Practice. The role reports to the Regional Director, Mining (AIM) and involves working with local and international teams.

Qualifications

• 5-7 years’ experience in structural design for underground/surface mining infrastructure.
• Registration as a Candidate Engineer with ECSA; Professional Engineer with ECSA would be advantageous.
• In-depth knowledge of structural concrete and steelwork; knowledge of dynamic loading advantageous.
• Knowledge of structural software suites such as PROKON; Strand 7 and STAAD Pro advantageous.
• Working knowledge of Bentley ProjectWise and OpenBuildings Designer (Microstation) advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Developing structural design basis and criteria.
• Developing technical specifications for construction.
• Developing technical discipline documentation for enquiry, contract placement, Scope of Work and MTOs; review bid submissions and TEAR.
• Developing structural designs from Concept Phase through to Execution.
• Undertaking structural analysis and design calculations with design reports.
• Demonstrating knowledge of OHSA, MHSA and SANS codes; international loading knowledge advantageous.
• Guiding designers with input and 3D model development; participate in 3D model reviews.
• Reviewing drawings and fabrication drawings; coordination across disciplines.
• Participating in client meetings and engaging with client stakeholders to meet scope and outcomes.
• Managing the structural discipline for projects in scope, budget, schedule and quality.
• Participating in risk reviews and design verification.
• Mentoring junior engineers; site inspections and technical report writing.
