About the Role

Our client, a leading national retailer, is seeking an experienced and strategic Senior Retail Buyer to join their dynamic merchandising team, based in or near Upington, Northern Cape . This pivotal role will be responsible for developing and executing comprehensive buying strategies for assigned product categories, driving profitability, and ensuring the company offers a competitive and relevant product assortment. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of market trends, strong negotiation skills, and a proven track record in retail buying and merchandise planning. You will work closely with vendors, sales teams, and marketing to identify opportunities, manage supplier relationships, and optimize inventory levels. Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement effective buying strategies for assigned product categories to maximize sales and profitability in Upington and beyond.
• Identify market trends, customer needs, and competitive landscape to inform product selection and assortment planning.

• Negotiate pricing, payment terms, and delivery schedules with suppliers to achieve optimal cost efficiencies.
• Manage the entire product lifecycle, from initial selection and ordering to in-store placement and markdown strategies.
• Collaborate with the marketing team to develop promotional plans and product launch strategies.
• Analyze sales data, inventory levels, and market feedback to make informed buying decisions and optimize stock turns.
• Manage budgets and forecasts for assigned categories, ensuring financial targets are met.
• Stay current with industry best practices, emerging trends, and competitor activities within the Northern Cape retail market.
• Provide leadership and guidance to junior buyers or buying assistants as needed.

Requirements

• Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive experience in retail buying or merchandise planning, with a focus on specific product categories.
• Proven track record of successfully managing buying budgets and driving profitable sales growth.
• Strong analytical, quantitative, and negotiation skills.
• Deep understanding of retail merchandising, inventory management, and supply chain principles.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and vendor management skills.
• Proficiency in retail buying software, ERP systems, and advanced Excel skills.
• Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, Merchandising, or a related field; advanced degree is a plus.
• Ability to travel as required to meet with suppliers and attend industry events relevant to the Northern Cape.
• Strategic thinking and the ability to translate market insights into actionable buying plans.
• Adaptability to changing market dynamics and consumer preferences.
