About the Role

Our client, a significant contributor to the South African mining landscape, is seeking to appoint a highly skilled Senior Mine Ventilation Engineer to their operational hub in Pretoria, Gauteng, ZA . This critical role ensures the health and safety of personnel working in underground environments by designing, implementing, and managing comprehensive mine ventilation systems. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining optimal air quality, temperature, and pressure conditions, as well as mitigating risks associated with gases, dust, and heat. This position demands a deep understanding of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and regulatory requirements pertinent to underground mining safety.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, model, and implement mine ventilation systems for underground mining operations, considering airflow, heat transfer, and contaminant dispersion.
• Conduct detailed ventilation surveys, including air velocity, pressure, and gas concentration measurements.
• Develop and manage ventilation plans, ensuring compliance with national and international safety standards and regulations.
• Specify and select ventilation equipment, including fans, ducting, and environmental monitoring systems.
• Perform heat and stress modeling to assess thermal comfort and environmental conditions.
• Analyze ventilation network performance and identify opportunities for optimization and energy efficiency.
• Investigate and resolve ventilation-related issues, including dust suppression and fume control.
• Provide technical guidance and training to ventilation officers and mine personnel.
• Liaise with mine management, safety departments, and regulatory bodies on ventilation matters.
• Maintain accurate records and reports related to ventilation performance and compliance.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field with a specialization in ventilation.
• Minimum of 8 years of hands-on experience in mine ventilation engineering, specifically within underground mining.
• Proficiency in mine ventilation modeling software (e.g., Ventsim, VentCAD, Whisper).
• Strong understanding of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer principles as applied to mining.
• Knowledge of South African mining regulations related to ventilation and occupational health and safety.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
• Strong communication, report writing, and presentation skills.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Professional Engineer (PrEng) registration or eligibility is highly desirable.
• Experience with gas monitoring systems and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a plus.
