Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a seasoned Chief Mechanical Engineer to lead the maintenance and management of a large mobile mining fleet near Polokwane. You will drive preventive maintenance, manage budgets, mentor engineers, and improve equipment reliability and safety within a major Limpopo operation.

The role requires a BEng/BSc in Mechanical Engineering with 10+ years in mechanical engineering and strong leadership, CMMS proficiency, and knowledge of heavy equipment systems. A PrEng is desirable.

Qualifications

• BEng/BSc in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent qualification.
• Professional registration (PrEng) with ECSA is highly desirable.
• Minimum 10 years in mechanical engineering, with at least 7 years in heavy mobile equipment maintenance in mining/construction.
• Proven experience in leading and managing large technical teams.
• Strong knowledge of heavy-duty diesel engines, hydraulic and electrical systems in mining equipment.
• Proficiency in maintenance management systems (CMMS) and diagnostic tools.
• Excellent leadership, communication, financial management and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the mechanical engineering department responsible for maintenance and repair of the mobile mining fleet.
• Develop and implement preventive and corrective maintenance programs to maximize uptime and lifespan.
• Oversee workshop operations, ensuring efficient use of resources, tools, and spare parts.
• Manage the departmental budget, controlling costs and ensuring efficient expenditure.
• Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations for maintenance activities.
• Mentor and develop the maintenance team, fostering technical excellence, safety, and continuous improvement.
• Analyze equipment performance data to identify trends, troubleshoot issues, and implement proactive solutions.
