Job description

It’s fun to work in a company where people truly BELIEVE in what they're doing! Reporting to the Group Company Secretary, Regulatory Affairs & Compliance Director, you will own and lead the regulatory compliance programme for the Group as an individual contributor. You will translate the compliance and governance strategy into annual plans, policies and frameworks, manage the function’s external advisors and compliance technology, and hold accountability for the compliance universe, monitoring programme and regulatory reporting. You will be a trusted advisor to senior leadership and the primary day-to-day interface with regulators, influencing outcomes through expertise rather than line authority.

What you will do
  • Own the compliance universe, set the annual compliance risk management plans to ensure an effective control environment and direct the compliance monitoring and assurance program.
  • Enforce a group compliance policy that clearly assigns roles and responsibilities, ensures all compliance tasks are effectively managed, and provide adequate oversight of compliance activities.
  • Foster a culture of compliance through regular engagement with senior management, ExCo and the Board on emerging risks and trends.
  • Develop and maintain management framework of group policies and guide the business in implementing change management, communication and training.
  • Assess proposed, new and amended legislation and regulations, promptly determine their impact on business operations, and coordinate with internal stakeholders to prepare comments and submit them to regulators.
  • Engage proactively with regulators and industry self-regulatory bodies, in collaboration with the External Affairs Director, while maintaining formal relationships and regular contact.
  • Strengthen, maintain and implement the Group’s ethics management framework in association with the Internal Audit and Risk Management function, including reporting to relevant governance structures.
  • Establish a centralised digital regulatory knowledge centre to improve Group-wide access to accurate information and preserve institutional knowledge.
  • Track regulatory approvals, licences and renewals, manage compliance with licence conditions, ensure subsidiaries meet sector-specific licensing requirements, and provide Group-level oversight of licensing exposure and compliance gaps.
  • Prepare and present compliance and regulatory reports to ExCo and the relevant Board committees.
  • Strengthen compliance capability across the business by coordinating training and guidance to business unit compliance champions.
  • Providing company secretarial support to relevant governance structures.
What you will bring to the table
  • Key attributes and competencies
  • Deep knowledge of South African regulatory, corporate governance and compliance framework
  • Able to influence and hold senior stakeholders accountable without direct line authority
  • Sound judgement and a strong ethical compass in ambiguous, high-stakes matters
  • Communicate confidently in writing and verbally with ExCo, Board committees and regulators.
Minimum Experience & Qualification
  • LLB, or postgraduate degree in a risk or compliance related field; preferably with admission as an Attorney or Advocate
  • 8 - 10 years' experience in regulatory compliance, governance or company secretariat roles, including at senior specialist level
  • Proven experience managing an end-to-end compliance programme and reporting on governance structures
Advantageous Skills
  • FMCG / consumer goods market experience and knowledge of the regulatory environment
  • Compliance Practitioner certification (CPrac SA) or Chartered Governance Professional (CGISA)
  • Exposure to compliance technology, GRC platforms and data-driven assurance reporting
What you will be measured on
  • Compliance with applicable legislation and regulatory requirements
  • Compliance monitoring plan delivered and remediation actions closed on time
  • Accuracy and meeting timeliness of statutory, regulatory and committee reporting
  • Zero regulatory findings, penalties or adverse regulator feedback
  • Compliance awareness and capability uplift across business units
  • Business stakeholder satisfaction with compliance and governance support
  • Proficiency in dealing with all stakeholders
