Job summary

Placements24 seeks a seasoned Lead Geologist to head geological exploration and evaluation efforts from anywhere in South Africa. You will direct seismic interpretation, well data analysis and 3D model validation, while guiding a remote geoscience team.

The role requires a Master’s or PhD in Geology with 10+ years in oil and gas exploration, strong leadership, and proven prospect generation across basins. Remote collaboration with engineers and JV partners is essential.

Qualifications

• Masters or PhD in Geology, Geophysics, or related earth science discipline.
• Over 10 years of oil and gas exploration geology experience, with substantial lead/supervisory roles.
• Extensive experience with seismic interpretation software (Petrel, Kingdom Suite).
• Deep knowledge of sequence stratigraphy, sedimentology, and structural geology.
• Proven track record in prospect generation and evaluation across settings.
• Strong leadership and remote team management abilities.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills.
• Familiarity with well logging interpretation and core analysis techniques.

Responsibilities

• Lead geological interpretation of seismic data, well logs, and core data to identify and evaluate hydrocarbon prospects.
• Develop and implement regional and field-specific exploration strategies.
• Oversee the creation and validation of 3D geological models.
• Mentor and guide junior geologists and geoscience teams.
• Collaborate with reservoir engineers and geophysicists on integrated field studies.
• Prepare detailed geological reports and presentations for management and JV partners.
• Manage geological databases and ensure data quality control.
• Evaluate and recommend drilling targets based on geological risk assessment.
