Qualifications

About the Role

Our client, a key player in shaping South Africa's Energy infrastructure, is seeking an innovative and experienced Senior Grid Modernization Engineer . This role, based in Polokwane, Limpopo , is central to developing and implementing strategies that enhance the reliability, efficiency, and resilience of the electricity grid. You will be involved in projects related to smart grid technologies, distributed energy resource integration, and advanced control systems. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in power systems engineering, a forward-thinking approach to grid challenges, and excellent project management skills. This is a significant opportunity to contribute to the transformation of the energy landscape in the Limpopo province and beyond, working from the strategic city of Polokwane .

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the planning, design, and implementation of grid modernization initiatives, including smart metering, automation, and advanced distribution management systems (ADMS).
• Analyze grid performance data to identify areas for improvement and develop technical solutions.
• Evaluate and integrate distributed energy resources (DERs) such as solar PV and battery storage into the grid.
• Develop technical specifications for new grid technologies and equipment.
• Oversee the implementation and testing of grid modernization projects, ensuring they meet performance and reliability targets.
• Collaborate with internal teams, external vendors, and regulatory bodies to ensure project success.
• Provide technical expertise and guidance on grid stability, power quality, and protection issues related to modernization efforts.
• Stay abreast of industry best practices, emerging technologies, and regulatory requirements in grid modernization.
• Develop business cases and cost-benefit analyses for modernization projects.
• Ensure that all modernization activities comply with safety and environmental standards.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, with a specialization in Power Systems. A Master's degree is highly desirable.
• Minimum of 7 years of experience in power systems engineering, with a specific focus on grid modernization, smart grids, or distribution network planning.
• Proven experience with SCADA, ADMS, AMI systems, and other grid modernization technologies.
• Strong understanding of power system analysis, including load flow, stability, and fault analysis.
• Experience with distributed energy resource integration and control strategies.
• Excellent project management and leadership skills.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Effective communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Professional Engineer (Pr. Eng.) registration with ECSA is a strong advantage.
• Knowledge of South African grid codes and regulations is beneficial.
