Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Senior Geologist to lead field-based exploration initiatives in the Soweto, Gauteng region. The role focuses on identifying deposits of gold, PGMs and base metals through mapping, sampling, drilling, and 3D modeling.

The ideal candidate will have MSc/MGeol, SACNASP registration, and 8+ years of grassroots exploration experience with strong leadership and data interpretation skills. Fieldwork will be extensive and travel-intensive, with a strong safety culture.

Qualifications

• MSc or MGeol in Geology or a related Earth Science discipline.
• Professional registration with SACNASP is essential.
• Minimum of 8 years of progressive mineral exploration geology experience.
• Proficiency in Leapfrog, ArcGIS and Datamine.

Responsibilities

• Design, plan, and implement geological exploration programs, including mapping, sampling, and drilling campaigns.
• Interpret and integrate geological, geochemical, and geophysical data to identify and evaluate mineral targets.
• Develop and manage 3D geological models and resource estimates for identified prospects.
• Supervise and mentor junior geologists and field technicians, ensuring high standards of work.
• Conduct geological mapping, structural analysis, and rock/soil/core logging.
• Manage field logistics, including equipment, personnel, and safety protocols.
• Liaise with mining engineers, metallurgists, and other specialists to assess deposit viability.
• Prepare detailed geological reports, exploration updates, and presentations for management and stakeholders.

About the Role

Our client, a dynamic junior mining company focused on exploring and developing mineral resources, is seeking a highly experienced Senior Geologist to lead exploration initiatives in the Soweto, Gauteng region. This field-based role is critical for identifying and evaluating prospective mineral deposits, including gold, platinum group metals, and base metals. The Senior Geologist will be responsible for designing and executing exploration programs, interpreting geological data, managing field teams, and ensuring the safety and efficiency of all exploration activities. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of deposit modeling, structural geology, geochemistry, and exploration geophysics, combined with a proven track record in grassroots exploration and resource definition. This position demands extensive fieldwork and a strong commitment to the principles of safe and sustainable mining exploration.

• Proven experience in grassroots exploration, target generation, and resource modeling.
• Proficiency in geological software (e.g., Leapfrog, ArcGIS, Datamine) and GIS applications.
• Strong understanding of various exploration techniques, including geochemistry, geophysics, and drilling methods.
• Excellent field leadership, communication, and data interpretation skills.
• Willingness to undertake extensive fieldwork in potentially remote locations.
• Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
