Job summary

Placements24 in Mossel Bay, Western Cape, is seeking a Senior Formulation Scientist to lead drug product development, focusing on solid dosage forms, injectables, and complex delivery systems. Translate preclinical candidates into stable, patient-friendly products.

You will design, optimize, and validate formulations, perform analytical testing, ensure GMP/ICH compliance, and collaborate across teams while mentoring scientists and staying current with regulatory guidelines.

Qualifications

• PhD or Master’s degree in a related field (Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmaceutics, Chemistry)
• 7+ years of formulation development experience in pharma
• Solid expertise in solid dosage forms, injectables, or complex delivery systems
• Proficiency with HPLC, dissolution testing, particle size analysis, and microscopy
• Strong GMP/ICH knowledge and regulatory submission experience
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical mindset, and creativity
• Strong written and verbal communication; ability to prepare technical reports
• Experience leading projects and mentoring scientists

Responsibilities

• Design and develop formulations for oral, parenteral, and topical delivery systems.
• Conduct pre-formulation studies to characterize drugs and excipients.
• Optimize formulation and manufacturing processes to achieve desired release, stability, and bioavailability.
• Perform analytical testing to evaluate product performance and purity.
• Develop and validate analytical methods for characterization of drug products.
• Prepare development reports, protocols, and regulatory submission materials.
• Collaborate with analytical development, regulatory affairs, and manufacturing teams to progress projects.
• Stay updated with advances in formulation science and regulatory guidelines.
• Mentor junior scientists and provide technical leadership in formulation projects.
