Responsible for the design, development, implementation, and technical support of electrical systems for data centres, critical power and infrastructure projects. The Electrical Engineer will develop safe, reliable, and efficient electrical solutions, including LV/MV distribution, UPS and battery systems, generators, transformers, switchgear, ATS/STS systems, busbars, and PDUs.
The role includes preparing and reviewing SLDs, electrical calculations, specifications, BOQs, and technical drawings, supporting tenders and equipment selection, and providing engineering support throughout design, installation, testing, commissioning, and handover.
The Electrical Engineer will work closely with clients, consultants, suppliers, contractors, and internal project teams to ensure solutions comply with applicable standards, client requirements, project specifications, budgets, and timelines.
Requirements & Skills:
Education
- BEng / BSc / BTech in Electrical Engineering, preferably specialising in Electrical Power Engineering.
- ECSA registration as a Candidate Engineer/Technologist advantageous; Professional Engineer/Technologist registration would be beneficial for a senior role.
- Relevant training or certification in data centre infrastructure, UPS systems, generators, electrical protection or critical power systems advantageous.
Experience
- 3–7+ years' relevant electrical engineering experience, preferably within data centres, critical infrastructure, industrial facilities or mission-critical environments.
- Experience in electrical system design, equipment selection, installation, testing and commissioning.
- Experience with LV/MV distribution systems, UPS systems, generators, ATS/STS, switchgear, transformers, busbars, PDUs and earthing systems.
- Experience preparing and reviewing Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), electrical layouts, load schedules, cable schedules and technical specifications.
- Experience supporting tenders, BOQs, quotations and technical proposals.
- Experience coordinating contractors, suppliers and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Site and commissioning experience would be strongly advantageous.
Knowledge
- Strong understanding of AC and DC electrical systems, single-phase and three-phase power.
- Electrical load calculations, current, voltage, kW, kVA, power factor and demand calculations.
- Three-phase Star and Delta systems.
- Data centre electrical architectures including N, N+1, N+2 and 2N redundancy.
- UPS and battery systems, including autonomy and capacity calculations.
- Generator sizing and integration.
- LV/MV switchgear and distribution.
- ATS, STS, and automatic transfer/control philosophies.
- Busbar and tap‑off systems.
- Rack and PDU power distribution.
- Cable sizing, voltage drop, and derating.
- Short‑circuit levels, discrimination/selectivity and protection coordination.
- Earthing, bonding and lightning protection principles.
- Relevant SANS/IEC standards, electrical regulations and occupational health & safety requirements.
- Understanding of data centre resilience, availability, maintainability and energy efficiency.
Technical Skills
- Ability to develop and review SLDs, electrical schematics, layouts, load schedules and technical drawings.

- UPS, battery, and generator sizing.
- Transformer, switchgear, busbar, and PDU selection.

Essential Functions
- Design and develop electrical systems for data centres, critical power and infrastructure projects.
- Prepare and review Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), electrical schematics, layouts, load schedules and cable schedules.
- Perform electrical calculations including load analysis, cable sizing, voltage drop, fault levels, protection, power factor and equipment sizing.
- Design and specify LV/MV distribution systems, switchgear, transformers, UPS systems, batteries, generators, ATS/STS, busbars, tap‑off boxes and PDUs.
- Develop electrical solutions incorporating appropriate redundancy philosophies, including N, N+1, N+2 and 2N configurations.
- Prepare technical specifications, scopes of work, BOQs, equipment schedules and technical documentation for projects and tenders.
- Review client requirements, tender specifications, drawings and technical documentation and develop compliant engineering solutions.
- Evaluate supplier and subcontractor technical proposals, quotations, drawings and equipment selections.
- Provide technical support to Sales, Projects, Procurement and Operations during tendering and project execution.
- Coordinate electrical designs with mechanical, structural, civil, controls/BMS and other engineering disciplines.
- Conduct site inspections, surveys and technical assessments and identify existing system constraints and risks.
- Oversee and support electrical installation, testing, commissioning and handover activities.
- Perform troubleshooting and root‑cause analysis of electrical equipment and system failures and prepare technical reports.
- Ensure electrical designs and installations comply with applicable SANS, IEC, client, safety and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain accurate engineering documentation, drawings, calculations, revisions and as‑built records.
- Liaise professionally with clients, consultants, contractors, suppliers and equipment manufacturers on technical matters.
- Assist with project cost optimisation and value engineering while maintaining system reliability, safety and performance.
- Support the delivery of projects within agreed scope, programme, budget, quality and safety requirements.
- Provide technical input during client meetings, project reviews, design reviews and tender clarification meetings.
- Travel to project sites locally and internationally when required to provide engineering, installation and commissioning support.
