Job summary

RPO Recruitment's client in Cape Town is seeking a Senior Electrical & Automation Design Engineer to lead projects from concept through to commissioning and optimisation.

You will design control systems, develop PLC/SCADA/HMI software, specify panels and components, perform FAT, support on-site installation, and help maintain engineering standards.

This role requires 5 years in industrial automation and travel to sites as needed.

Qualifications

• BEng, BTech or National Diploma in Electrical, Electronic or Mechatronic Engineering.
• Minimum 5 years' experience in industrial automation (8+ years preferred).
• Strong background in electrical design and industrial control systems.
• Proven experience with PLC programming (Siemens TIA Portal and/or Rockwell Studio 5000).
• Experience developing SCADA and HMI applications.
• Proficiency in electrical design software, with EPLAN being highly advantageous.
• Solid understanding of industrial instrumentation, including 4-20 mA, RTDs, Modbus, Profinet, Ethernet/IP, and similar communication protocols.
• Experience with motor control centres (MCCs), variable speed drives (VSDs), industrial control panels, and motor control systems.
• Willingness to travel for site installations and commissioning as required.

Responsibilities

• Design electrical control systems and develop detailed electrical schematics.

• Support procurement activities by selecting appropriate electrical equipment and instrumentation.
• Perform factory acceptance testing (FAT), workshop testing, and system verification.
• Provide on-site installation support, commissioning, troubleshooting, and fault finding.
• Develop, implement, and maintain company electrical engineering standards and best practices.
• Deliver projects from concept through detailed design, testing, commissioning, and handover.
