About the Role

Our client, a globally recognized leader in industrial automation and process control, is seeking an accomplished Lead Electrical Controls Engineer to spearhead their operations in Cape Town, Western Cape . This critical role involves designing, implementing, and optimizing sophisticated control systems for a variety of industrial applications. You will be instrumental in enhancing efficiency, ensuring safety, and driving innovation within our manufacturing and processing facilities. The ideal candidate possesses a deep understanding of automation technologies, PLC programming, and HMI development, coupled with strong leadership capabilities. This position is based at our facility in Cape Town and requires a dedicated, on-site presence.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the design, development, and implementation of complex electrical control systems, including PLCs, DCS, SCADA, and HMI systems. Oversee the entire project lifecycle for control system installations, from conceptualization and detailed design to commissioning and ongoing support. Develop and maintain PLC programs (e.g., Siemens, Rockwell) and HMI configurations to meet specific operational requirements. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define control strategies, resolve integration issues, and ensure project success. Perform advanced troubleshooting and root cause analysis of control system malfunctions, implementing effective corrective actions. Develop comprehensive technical documentation, including control philosophy, logic diagrams, network diagrams, and user manuals. Ensure all control system designs comply with relevant industry standards, safety regulations, and cybersecurity protocols. Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and technicians, fostering skill development and best practices in automation engineering. Contribute to strategic planning for automation upgrades and the integration of new technologies within our Cape Town operations.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field from an accredited university. A minimum of 10 years of experience in electrical controls engineering, with a significant portion focused on industrial automation and system integration. Proven expertise in programming and configuring various PLC platforms (e.g., Siemens S7, Allen-Bradley ControlLogix) and HMI software (e.g., WinCC, FactoryTalk View). Strong knowledge of industrial communication protocols (e.g., Profibus, Profinet, Ethernet/IP). Experience with SCADA system design and implementation. Demonstrated leadership experience, with the ability to manage projects and mentor engineering teams. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Strong understanding of functional safety principles and standards (e.g., IEC 61508). Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
