Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Senior Concept Artist to join our George, Western Cape studio. You will create exceptional character designs, drive visual development, and collaborate with directors to shape the look of diverse projects.

Based in George, you will contribute to artistic direction, mentoring juniors, and maintaining high-quality storytelling visuals. A contractor role with competitive rates commensurate with experience is offered, with opportunities for growth in a dynamic studio

Qualifications

• Proven professional experience as a Concept Artist with a strong portfolio.
• Proficiency in Photoshop; familiarity with ZBrush/Blender is a plus.
• Strong anatomy, form, silhouette, color theory, composition.
• Ability to design a wide range of character types; strong communication.
• Experience in production pipelines and meeting deadlines.
• Willingness to relocate to George, Western Cape.

About the Role

Our client is seeking a highly talented and experienced Senior Concept Artist to join their acclaimed studio in George, Western Cape . This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute your exceptional artistic vision to visually stunning projects that captivate audiences worldwide. You will be responsible for creating compelling character designs, defining visual styles, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to bring imaginative worlds to life. This role is crucial in setting the artistic direction and ensuring the aesthetic quality of our client's productions. As this role requires close collaboration and access to studio resources, it is a non-remote position based in our George, Western Cape offices.

Key Responsibilities

• Conceptualize and create high-quality character designs, outfits, and accessories for various projects.
• Develop detailed visual development work, including character turnarounds, expression sheets, and detailed callouts.
• Collaborate closely with Art Directors, Directors, and other artists to establish and maintain visual consistency.
• Research historical, cultural, and biological references to inform and inspire character creation.
• Explore multiple design directions and present compelling visual concepts to stakeholders.
• Adapt artistic style and techniques to match project requirements and tone.
• Provide constructive feedback and guidance to junior artists.
• Contribute to the overall art direction and visual storytelling of the project.
• Manage personal workload and meet project deadlines effectively.
• Stay updated on industry trends, artistic techniques, and emerging technologies in character design.

Requirements

• Proven professional experience as a Concept Artist, with a strong portfolio demonstrating exceptional character design skills.
• Proficiency in industry-standard digital art software, including Adobe Photoshop, and familiarity with 3D sculpting tools (e.g., ZBrush, Blender) is a plus.
• Strong understanding of anatomy, form, silhouette, color theory, and composition.
• Ability to create a wide range of character types, from realistic to stylized.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to receive and incorporate feedback.
• Experience working within a production pipeline and meeting deadlines.
• A keen eye for detail and a passion for visual storytelling.
• Experience in George, Western Cape or willingness to relocate.
• Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team.
• A deep understanding of narrative and emotional expression in character design.
