Job summary

Old Mutual South Africa is seeking an experienced Platform Engineer to build high performing, scalable platforms enabling agility and rapid deployment. You will work with development, DevOps and infrastructure teams to ensure scalable, reliable systems under load.

Key responsibilities include end-to-end platform performance, SLA/OLA metrics, cost optimisation, and driving architectural improvements. The role requires advanced Kubernetes, cloud and IaC expertise within a dynamic environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in CS, EE, IT or related field.
• 7+ years of software and platform engineering experience.
• 3–5 years writing infrastructure as code (Terraform, AWS CDK, CloudFormation).
• Solid experience with observability platforms like Datadog.
• Experience with microservices architecture and RESTful APIs.
• Solid Kubernetes experience including IaC for clusters and cloud resources.
• Experience with Kubernetes CRDs and Helm charts.
• Experience in fine tuning Kubernetes HPA configs.
• Moderate Go/Python programming experience.
• Solid GitOps and Git-based operations experience.
• Strong AWS experience and distributed systems knowledge.
• Experience with SQS and Kafka; supporting mobile apps.

Responsibilities

• Own end-to-end platform performance across development, test and production.
• Build scalable, cost-efficient platforms aligned with business objectives.
• Lead resolution of platform service issues with minimal disruption.
• Align teams to service improvement and innovation plans.
• Develop monitoring and data-driven design decisions.
• Drive adoption of new practices and technologies across groups.
