Job summary

South Zambezi Engineering Services is seeking a senior civil engineering leader to direct, plan, and oversee major water and wastewater infrastructure projects in South Africa. You will guide engineers, coordinate design, and ensure delivery within time and budget while maintaining quality standards.

The role requires PrEng registration with ECSA, 15+ years in design, management and construction, and hands-on experience with pipelines, pump stations, reservoirs, and treatment plants.

Qualifications

• BEng (Civil) or equivalent degree.
• Must be professionally registered or registrable with ECSA as PrEng.
• Extensive experience in bulk water and wastewater municipal infrastructure, storm water, earthworks, and basic road/drainage systems.
• Minimum 15 years in engineering design, management and construction.
• Minimum 5 years after professional registration with ECSA or other bodies.
• Proven leadership in a consulting environment.
• Knowledge of ISO quality management systems and relevant legislation.

Responsibilities

• Lead and guide engineers, technicians, and draughtsmen in the Civil Engineering Department.
• Coordinate resources and ensure team has required tools.
• Formulate systems for smooth operation of the Civil Engineering section.
• Design review and reporting to meet project objectives.
• Prepare proposals, tenders, and contract documents for infrastructure services.
• Oversee site construction monitoring and reporting; attend site meetings and prepare reports.
• Provide ad-hoc office support as needed by HoD.
• Mentor staff to support professional development.
• Keep abreast of water and wastewater engineering developments.
• Coordinate production of technical drawings and reporting inputs.
• Liaise with clients and ensure ISO compliance.
• Support tender stage inputs and project profitability management.

Job Summary

Closely collaborates with the HoD and Executive Directors: Civil Engineering in directing, co-ordinating, initiating, planning, executing, monitoring & control, integration, and closing of the Civil Engineering Projects. Drives general Civil Engineering related design and deliverables.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead, manage and guide Engineers, technicians, draughts persons and delegate work effectively in the Civil Engineering Department.
• Ensure that all employees in the team are supplied with the relevant tools required to perform jobs
• Formulate systems for smooth running of the Civil Engineering section to enable synergy and coherence
• Design, Reporting in Civil Engineering section to meet projects objectives.
• Preparation of proposals, tender and contract documents for the infrastructure services nationally and internationally.
• Construction monitoring and implementation of site construction work as and when required on a part time basis on at least the following aspects:
  • Ensuring compliance with design/specifications and standards.
  • Ensuring compliance with programme and all knowledge areas.
  • Attending site meetings.
  • Preparing reports.

• Do any ad-hoc office duties as assigned by the HoD: Civil Engineering
• Guide and train in design and other necessary skills to engineers and technicians to ensure continuous professional development
• Keep abreast with technology development and research in the field of water and wastewater engineering
• Coordinate and supervise the production of technical drawings design and reporting inputs by supporting staff
• Client liaison including meetings and reporting
• Compliance with the company’s Quality Management System ISO9001 requirements
• Assisting with the preparation of requests for proposals expressions of interest panel applications and tenders
• Management of projects and monitoring of performance and profitability

Qualifications And Experience / Minimum Requirements

• BEng (Civil), or equivalent degree.
• Must be professionally registered or registrable with ECSA as PrEng, and SAICE Good experience in bulk water and wastewater municipal infrastructure, storm water systems, earthworks, basic road and drainage systems. Some process design experience will be advantageous.
• Experience of managing a team of junior and managers.
• Minimum 15 years in engineering design, management and Construction.
• Extensive experience in construction of steel water pipeline, pump stations, reservoirs, abstraction works and water treatment plants.
• Minimum 5 years after professional (ECSA) registration or any other recognised professional bodies
• Proven track in management and leadership within consulting firm.
• Legal knowledge of Employee Equity Act, Labour and Employment laws, OHS Act, Design compliance standards.
• Knowledge of MS Office, MS Project, various civil and water design software.
• Drivers Licence is Essential.
• Quality Management Ensure that there is ISO compliance.
• Regular inter-provincial and international site visits and meetings.
• Salary is negotiable.
