Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Biophysics, Physics, Biochemistry, or related field with emphasis on biophysical techniques.
• Minimum of 5 years post‑doctoral research experience in a relevant scientific domain.
• Proven expertise in advanced fluorescence microscopy techniques (e.g., TIRF, FRET, FRAP) and image processing software.
• Demonstrated experience with computational analysis of complex biological data.
• Excellent understanding of molecular biology, cell biology, and protein biochemistry.
• Strong problem‑solving skills and a meticulous approach to experimental design and execution.
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly.
• Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in scientific research (e.g., Python, MATLAB) is highly advantageous.
• Experience with electron microscopy is a plus.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team in Pietermaritzburg.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement advanced imaging protocols (fluorescence, confocal, and electron microscopy) for biological samples.
• Design and conduct quantitative biophysical experiments to investigate protein dynamics, molecular interactions, and cellular processes.
• Analyze large datasets generated from imaging experiments using sophisticated computational tools and statistical methods.
• Operate and maintain sophisticated imaging equipment, ensuring optimal performance and calibration.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to interpret experimental results and contribute to manuscript preparation and grant writing.
• Mentor junior researchers and contribute to the overall scientific direction of the research group.
• Stay abreast of the latest advancements in biophysics, imaging technologies, and relevant biological sciences.
• Troubleshoot experimental challenges and develop innovative solutions.
• Contribute to safe laboratory practices and adherence to institutional guidelines.
