Job summary

Valterra Platinum Limited seeks a Section Ventilation Officer to maintain ventilation and occupational hygiene systems at Tumela Lower, Thabazimbi. You will support the Shaft Ventilation Engineer and ensure safe, compliant operations across mine sections.

Responsibilities include risk assessments, daily inspections, regulatory reporting, and advising on plan changes to minimize unsafe practices. A strong background in mine environmental control and OH is required, with several relevant

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years' experience in a mining environment.
• Practical experience of at least 5 years in ventilation and occupational hygiene.
• Relevant environmental health and safety certifications are preferred.

Responsibilities

• Interpretation of legal requirements.
• Ensure adherence to legal compliance through monitoring and reporting.
• Maintain policies, programmes, standards, codes of practice and procedures.
• Keep statutory plans up to date (Ventilation and mine rescue).
• Maintain ventilation and occupational hygiene strategies and systems.
• Conduct risk assessments and participate in audits.
• Conduct daily ventilation and occupational hygiene inspections and record findings.
• Meet deadlines for daily, weekly, monthly and ad-hoc reporting.
• Advise on changes to plans, schedules, procedures and standards to minimize unsafe practices.
• Ensure adherence to legal reporting requirements.

Job Description

The Section Ventilation Officer is responsible for the maintenance of ventilation and occupational hygiene systems and to provide the immediate supervisor with information to ensure a safe and healthy work environment

Roles And Responsibilities Include The Following

• Interpretation of legal requirements.
• Ensures adherence to legal compliance through monitoring and reporting.
• Responsible to ensure that policies, programmes, standards, codes of practice and procedures are maintained in accordance with legal and Group requirements.
• Statutory Plans are in place and up to date (Ventilation plans and mine rescue plans).
• Maintain Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene strategies and systems.
• Conduct risk assessments and participate in audits.
• Conducts daily ventilation and occupational hygiene inspections and records findings.
• Meet time deadlines pertaining to reporting (daily, weekly, monthly and ad-hoc).
• Provide information and advise regarding ventilation and occupational hygiene matters related to a specific workplace or section of the business area.
• Advise on changes to plans, schedules, procedures and standards to minimize the effect of unexpected or unsafe work practices.
• Ensures adherence to legal compliance in terms of required reports.

This role is at a D1 level reporting to the Shaft Ventilation Engineer

Qualifications

• Elementary certificate in Mine Environmental Control
• Chamber of Mines Intermediate Certificate in Mine Environmental Control
• Preferred additional:

• Certificate in Environmental Health
• Certificate in Occupational Hygiene
• Certificate in Occupational Hygiene Risk Assessment
• Certificate in Occupational Hygiene Legislation

• Associated member – Mine Ventilation Society of South Africa

Experience Required

• Experience of at least 2 years in the Mining Environment
• Practical experience of at least 5 years in the Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene Field.
