Job summary

Valterra Platinum in South Africa is seeking a senior Mine Manager to lead a modern mechanised underground operation. The role reports to the Senior Manager Mining and focuses on safety, planning and performance across development and production.

You will coordinate with Owners, EPCM, and contractors, drive best-practice processes, manage risk, and develop a high-performing team capable of achieving zero-harm targets and reliable output.

Qualifications

• Bachelors/Honours in mining engineering (statutory holder qualifications as required).
• Post graduate Mining qualification will be advantageous.
• Mine Managers Certification (DMRE).

Responsibilities

• Focus on compliance to standards and best practice in health, safety, environmental. supports a culture toward zero harm.
• Ensures site work is completed in adherence to the Project Safety, Health and Environmental Plan and the Anglo Platinum Safety, Health and Environmental standards and systems.
• Ensure agreed and approved mine plans and schedules are executed by the mining contractor to achieve a high compliance delivery to plan.
• Liaise and coordinate between the site contractor’s management teams, the EPC and project owners + site teams to ensure effective engagement, planning and execution of work.
• Effective management of mining contractor performance, ensuring high operating performance standards, productive use of equipment and resources, and an uncompromising approach to Safety.
• Drives and supports a collaborative approach to continuous improvement in performance outcomes and productivity of the mining contractor and owners team.
• Actively manages and contributes to improvement initiatives in the underground mine to establish best practice mechanised mining performance.
• Co-ordinates meetings and management routines between the Owner and Mining Contractor to ensure effective Short Interval control processes are applied to support a high performance and compliance, high reliability work culture within the mine contractor and owners mining team.
• Effective engagement and management of interfaces with Owner team underground Mining Technical support functions – Ventilation, Geotechnical, Mine Planning, Survey and operational Geology to support efficient mechanised mining performance.
• Monitor contractor risk and safety management performance, ensuring critical risks and hazards continuously identified and controlled.
• Develop and maintain an integrated team approach between the Owners + site teams, mining contractor, EPCM, suppliers, internal and external company stakeholders (Anglo and DB).
• Ensure all site mining activities meet requirements as defined by standards and requirements (per Outputs).
• Manages work priorities in support of the Mine Manager as required.
• Carries a statutory Appointment as required by Mine Manager (MHSA 2.6.1).

This role is at a band 6 level reporting to the Senior Manager Mining.

Qualifications

• An undergraduate qualification (Bachelors / Honours Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in a relevant mining engineering discipline. Statutory holder qualifications as required.
• Post graduate Mining qualification will be advantageous
• Mine Managers Certification (DMRE)

Additional Information

• 5+ years’ experience managing a modern mechanised high-performance underground mine – development and production experience.
• 10+ years’ experience in underground hard rock mining management – ideally combination of projects, development & production.
• Demonstrated proven track record as a manager in mine development and production (mining manager) in a large scale modern mechanised underground mining environment (essential).
• Understanding of application of key mining cycle activities and enablers to enable high performance best practice high speed development and production - including in-cycle shotcreting, mechanised ground support and application of modern semi-autonomous and autonomous operations for key cycle processes.
• Experience with direct line management of a high-performance underground mining contractor for development, production, services and general mine construction activities.
• Experience in ‘’what good looks like’’ to lead a best practice underground mechanised mine and know ‘’how’’ to co-ordinate and set up equipment, people and resources to mine safely, effectively and efficiently.
• A proven track record in effective management of high-performance underground mining teams - ability to coach, mentor and lead teams to establish a high-performance work culture, supporting a learning and skills development environment.
• Developed understanding of underground mobile equipment performance and how to operationally support best practice reliability centered maintenance teams.
