Placements24 seeks a Senior Power Electronics Engineer to join a pioneering renewable energy and EV charging company. The role focuses on designing high-efficiency power converters for EV charging, grid interfaces and energy storage, with emphasis on thermal management and EMC.

As a remote-first engineer, you will collaborate with a global team, validate designs through simulation and testing, and contribute to cutting-edge energy solutions from anywhere in South Africa, including Richards Bay.

Qualifications

• Master's or PhD in Electrical Engineering with a Power Electronics specialization.
• 8+ years of hands-on design experience for high-power electronics systems.
• Deep knowledge of power converter topologies, control algorithms and EMC.

Responsibilities

• Design high-efficiency power electronic converters (AC-DC, DC-DC, DC-AC) for EV charging, grid-tied inverters and energy storage.
• Perform circuit design, component selection and layout guidance for complex modules.
• Analyze power converter topologies, control strategies and thermal management.
• Use SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink, PSIM to model and predict performance of power circuits.
• Develop and execute test plans for prototypes and production units.
• Troubleshoot design issues across development and production phases.
• Collaborate with firmware, mechanical, and product teams in a remote environment.
• Stay updated on power semiconductors, components and technologies.
• Contribute to patent applications and technical publications.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop state-of-the-art power electronic converters (e.g., AC-DC, DC-DC, DC-AC) for various applications including EV charging, grid-tied inverters, and energy storage systems.
• Perform detailed circuit design, component selection, and layout guidance for complex power electronic modules.
• Conduct thorough analysis of power converter topologies, control strategies, and thermal management.
• Utilize simulation tools (e.g., SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink, PSIM) to model and predict the performance of power electronic circuits.
• Develop and execute test plans for prototypes and production units, verifying performance against specifications.
• Troubleshoot and resolve design issues encountered during development and production phases.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including firmware engineers, mechanical engineers, and product managers, in a remote environment.
• Stay current with the latest advancements in power semiconductor devices, passive components, and power electronic technologies.
• Contribute to patent applications and technical publications.

Requirements

• Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Power Electronics.
• Minimum of 8 years of hands-on experience in the design and development of high-power electronic systems.
• In-depth knowledge of various power converter topologies, control algorithms, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) principles.
• Proficiency with industry-standard simulation and design tools.
• Experience with laboratory testing and characterization of power electronic circuits.
• Strong understanding of thermal management techniques for power electronic components.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and a meticulous approach to design and testing.
• Effective communication skills, comfortable working within a remote team structure.
• Proven ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively.
