About the Role

Our client, a renowned international firm specializing in sustainable building design and consulting, is seeking a talented and motivated Remote HVAC Design Engineer to join their globally distributed team. This position is fully remote, allowing you to work from anywhere in South Africa. You will be responsible for the design, specification, and analysis of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems for a diverse range of commercial, institutional, and industrial projects. This role requires a deep understanding of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, psychrometrics, and building energy modeling. You will collaborate closely with architects, structural engineers, and project managers through virtual platforms to deliver efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally conscious HVAC solutions. The ideal candidate will be a proactive problem-solver with excellent communication skills and a passion for sustainable design. Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop HVAC systems for various building types, including load calculations, equipment selection, and system layout.
• Create detailed HVAC system drawings, schematics, and specifications using CAD and BIM software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit MEP).
• Perform energy modeling and simulations to optimize system performance and reduce energy consumption.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant building codes, ASHRAE standards, and environmental regulations.
• Collaborate virtually with project teams, including architects, electrical engineers, and clients, to define project requirements and design solutions.
• Conduct design reviews, troubleshooting, and provide technical support during the construction phase.
• Research and recommend innovative HVAC technologies and sustainable design strategies.
• Prepare technical reports, cost estimates, and project documentation.
• Maintain project documentation and ensure accuracy of all design-related information.
• Proactively communicate project status, potential issues, and solutions to project stakeholders.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• Minimum of 4 years of experience in HVAC system design, preferably in a consulting or engineering firm.
• Proficiency in HVAC design software, load calculation tools (e.g., HAP, TRACE 700), and energy modeling software (e.g., eQUEST, EnergyPlus).
• Strong knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit MEP for creating construction documents.
• Familiarity with South African building codes and energy efficiency standards.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a remote, self-directed environment.
• Experience with BIM workflows and collaboration platforms.
• Strong understanding of sustainable design principles and green building certifications (e.g., LEED).
• Must be legally authorized to work remotely in South Africa.
