Job summary

ISTA Personnel Solutions in South Africa is seeking an experienced AI Engineer to design and build practical AI-powered applications, agents and systems that solve real business problems.

This hands-on, build-first role requires broad practical AI development experience across LLMs, tools and integrations. You will work with modern AI frameworks and APIs to rapidly design, test and deploy working business solutions while collaborating with leadership.

Qualifications

• 3–5+ years of professional software engineering or closely related technical experience.
• Hands-on experience independently building and deploying AI-powered applications.
• Experience building AI agents or agentic systems using tools/APIs/data.
• Strong experience using AI development tools (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot).
• Experience with leading LLMs (Claude, OpenAI/GPT, Gemini).
• Experience with agentic frameworks (LangChain, LangGraph, AutoGen, CrewAI, MCP).
• Proficient in Python and/or JavaScript/TypeScript/Node.js.
• Experience integrating REST APIs and third-party systems.
• Familiar with Docker, Git/GitHub and modern deployment practices.
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Take business problems from concept to fully working AI-powered solutions.
• Design, build and deploy AI applications, internal tools, AI agents and intelligent systems.
• Build agentic systems capable of reasoning, using tools and data to complete multi-step tasks.
• Work with AI tools (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Copilot) to rapidly build and iterate solutions.
• Evaluate AI models, tools and platforms to choose the best fit for each use case.
• Integrate AI systems with CRMs, databases and messaging platforms.
• Develop workflows using n8n when appropriate to automate tasks.
• Deploy, test, monitor and continuously improve AI solutions post-launch.
