Job summary

Placements24 seeks a Senior Mechanical Systems Engineer for a fully remote role in aerospace propulsion. You will define architectures, lead design and integration of complex mechanical systems, and drive validation across projects.

Required: Master’s or PhD in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, 10+ years in propulsion, and expert CAD/CAE skills (CATIA, SolidWorks, ANSYS, STAR-CCM+). Remote work from anywhere, with Bloemfontein base as reference.

Qualifications

• Master's degree or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering.
• Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in mechanical systems engineering, with focus on aerospace propulsion.
• Deep understanding of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and structural mechanics as applied to propulsion.
• Expert proficiency in CAD software (e.g., CATIA, SolidWorks) and advanced CAE tools (e.g., ANSYS, STAR-CCM+).
• Experience with propulsion system components such as turbines, compressors, combustion chambers, and nozzles.
• Proven ability to manage complex technical projects in a remote or distributed team environment.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
• Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
• Experience with aerospace standards and qualification processes (e.g., DO-160, MIL-STD).

Responsibilities

• Lead the conceptualization, design, and development of advanced mechanical systems for aerospace propulsion applications.
• Define system requirements, architecture, and interfaces, ensuring alignment with project objectives.
• Conduct in-depth mechanical analysis, including stress, thermal, fatigue, and vibration analyses using advanced simulation tools (FEA, CFD).
• Oversee the integration of mechanical subsystems, ensuring compatibility and performance across the whole system.
• Develop and manage technical specifications, design documentation, and test plans for propulsion systems.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure integrated system design and functionality.
• Perform risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies for mechanical systems.
• Support prototype development, testing, and validation activities.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers.
• Stay abreast of emerging technologies and best practices in aerospace propulsion.
