Job summary

Lumina Personnel in Johannesburg is seeking a trade-tested Qualified Diesel Mechanic to lead the truck workshop section. You will supervise a team and ensure fleet availability through expert diagnostics and repairs.

This on-site role requires 5–8 years of post-apprenticeship experience, strong leadership, and a valid heavy vehicle license. Competitive salary package and incentive schemes are offered.

Qualifications

• Qualified Motor/Diesel Mechanic (Trade Test Certificate required).
• 5–8 years post-apprenticeship experience on heavy vehicles, trucks and fleet.
• Experience supervising or managing a workshop team.
• Advanced knowledge of engines, gearboxes, hydraulics, air brakes and electronic diagnostic systems.
• Valid heavy vehicle license and clean driving/discipline record.

Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a team of junior mechanics and apprentices.
• Perform diagnostics, fault-finding and repairs on fleet trucks and heavy vehicles.
• Sign off on repair work to meet safety and company standards.
• Manage job cards, track turnaround times and workshop flow.
• Enforce health and safety regulations and maintain a clean workspace.

Requirements

• Qualification: Qualified Motor/Diesel Mechanic (Trade Test Certificate required).
• Experience: Minimum of 5-8 years of post-apprenticeship experience working on heavy vehicles, commercial trucks, and fleet transport.
• Leadership: Proven experience supervising, leading, or managing a team in a workshop environment.
• Technical Skills: Advanced knowledge of commercial truck engines, gearboxes, hydraulics, air brakes, and electronic diagnostic systems.
• Attributes: Strong problem-solving abilities, excellent communication skills, a valid heavy vehicle license a clean track record.

Key Responsibilities

• Team Leadership: Manage, mentor, and allocate daily tasks to a team of junior mechanics and apprentices within your section.
• Diagnostics & Diagnostics: Perform advanced diagnostics, fault-finding, and complex mechanical/electrical repairs on fleet trucks and heavy vehicles.
• Quality Control: Oversee and sign off on all repair work within your section to ensure it meets safety and company standards.
• Workflow Management: Manage job cards, track turnaround times, and ensure workshop floor efficiency.
