Job summary

Placements24 in George, Western Cape invites a Public Health Inspector with a sanitation focus to join our team. The role blends field inspections with administrative tasks in a hybrid setup, aiming to uphold sanitation bylaws and protect community health.

You will inspect food premises, public spaces, and water sources; educate business owners; enforce regulations; and collaborate with other departments. A Diploma or Degree in Environmental Health and HPCSA registration are required.

Qualifications

• Diploma or Degree in Environmental Health or a related field.
• Registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Environmental Health Practitioner.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in public health inspection with emphasis on sanitation.
• Sound knowledge of national and local health regulations, bylaws and food safety standards.
• Experience in inspections, investigations and enforcement actions.

Responsibilities

• Conduct regular inspections of food premises, public spaces, water sources and waste disposal sites for compliance with sanitation bylaws and health regulations.
• Investigate public health nuisances and complaints and provide timely resolutions.
• Educate business owners and the public on sanitation practices, hygiene standards and food safety.
• Enforce public health laws, issue notices and take action when non-compliance is identified.
• Monitor and report on environmental conditions affecting public health (water quality, waste management).
• Collaborate with other municipal departments and external agencies to address public health issues.
• Maintain records of inspections, investigations and enforcement activities.
• Participate in public health awareness campaigns and educational initiatives.
• Assess and approve plans for new food establishments and sanitation systems.
• Respond to emergencies related to public health outbreaks or environmental hazards.
