Job summary

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is seeking a Public Health Data Specialist for a fixed-term 30-month contract based in Pretoria. You will apply public health data expertise to support data product development and evidence-based decision-making, reporting to the Research Group Leader.

Responsibilities span requirements capture, data standards, dashboards and digital solutions, with collaboration across multidisciplinary teams in an Agile-like delivery environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in public health, health informatics, data science, informatics, computer science, information systems, statistics, biostatistics, or related field with 6+ years of experience working with public health data environments.
• Postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline would be advantageous.
• Experience translating public health data requirements into data products, dashboards, reports, or digital solutions.

Public Health Data Specialist

(Thirty months contract)

About The Job

The CSIR has a fixed term vacancy for a Public Health Data Specialist in the e-Government Impact Area within the Next Generation Enterprises and Institution Cluster. The incumbent will be responsible for applying public health data expertise to support the development and delivery of data products that enable evidence-based decision-making. This position is based in Pretoria and will report to the Research Group Leader.

Key Responsibilities

• Engage with public health stakeholders to understand, analyse and document requirements for public health data products.
• Provide subject matter expertise on public health data, health information systems, health data standards and reporting requirements to support the design and delivery of public health data products.
• Translate public health data requirements into data products, analytical outputs, dashboards, reports and digital solutions.
• Work with multidisciplinary teams to support the design, development, testing and implementation of public health data products.
• Provide ongoing product direction throughout the delivery lifecycle.
• Support data quality, interoperability, health data standards and governance requirements within public health data products.
• Facilitate product reviews and user feedback sessions to support continuous product improvement.

Qualifications, Skills And Experience

• A Bachelor's degree in public health, health informatics, data science, informatics, computer science, information systems, statistics, biostatistics, or a related fields with at least six years' relevant experience working with public health data, health information systems, digital health platforms, health data standards, interoperability, health reporting, health analytics, or similar public health data environments;
• A Postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline would be advantageous;
• Demonstrated experience translating public health data requirements into data products, analytical outputs, dashboards, reports, or digital solutions.
• Demonstrated experience engaging with public health stakeholders and multidisciplinary technical teams to support the delivery of data-driven solutions.
• Experience working in Agile or iterative delivery environments.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to translate technical concepts into business and public health requirements.
• Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong planning and organisational skills.
• Attention to detail and commitment to data quality.
