Job summary

Afrimat Shared Services, based in Lyttelton or Tygervalley, seeks a Project Manager/Engineer with a Mechanical Engineering background to lead materials handling and plant design initiatives.

You will design conveyors, chutes and structural layouts, collaborate with contractors and consultants, and ensure safety and standards compliance on site across mining projects.

Qualifications

• Bachelor-level degree in mechanical engineering.
• 8–10 years of relevant experience in materials handling and mechanical design.
• Experience in layout and design of processing plants.
• Experience in structural and mechanical engineering design.
• CAD design experience; SolidWorks preferred.
• Experience selecting and specifying materials handling equipment.
• Experience designing mining equipment and systems.
• Willingness to travel to Afrimat sites.

Responsibilities

• Undertake mechanical engineering design and development, including conveyors, chute design, structural layouts and design, hydraulics and pneumatics.
• Develop and translate engineering concepts into practical, functional designs.
• Attend and participate in site meetings to assess project requirements and provide technical input.
• Manage contractors and monitor their performance in accordance with project requirements.
• Coordinate, manage and provide technical guidance to engineering consultants.
• Manage engineering projects from conceptualisation through to implementation and completion.
• Provide technical support during commissioning and installation of new equipment and systems.
• Ensure quality, health and safety requirements are incorporated into designs and project execution.

Minimum Qualifications / Experience

• Eng/BSc Degree in Mechanical Engineering
• 8–10 years’ relevant experience in materials handling and mechanical design, preferably within a mining environment
• Proven experience in the layout and design of processing plants
• Experience in structural and mechanical engineering design
• Minimum 3 years’ experience using CAD design software; proficiency in SolidWorks will be advantageous
• Experience in the selection and specification of suitable materials handling equipment
• Experience in the design of mechanical equipment and systems used within the mining industry
• Demonstrated project management experience will be advantageous
• Sound knowledge and practical experience of mining applications and processes
• Experience in producing process flow diagrams using AggFlow will be advantageous
• Registration as a Professional Engineer with ECSA will be advantageous
• Willingness to travel to Afrimat sites as required
• Valid driver’s licence and access to own reliable vehicle
• Must be medically fit to perform the inherent requirements of the position in accordance with the Mine Health and Safety Act

Duties and Responsibilities (not limited to):

• Develop and translate engineering concepts into practical, functional and fit-for-purpose designs
• Attend and participate in site meetings to assess project requirements and provide appropriate technical input.
• Manage contractors and monitor their performance in accordance with project requirements
• Coordinate, manage and provide technical guidance to engineering consultants
• Manage engineering projects where required, from conceptualisation and design through to implementation and completion
• Provide technical support during the commissioning and installation of new equipment and systems
• Ensure that quality, health and safety requirements are effectively incorporated into engineering designs and project execution
• Ensure that all engineering designs and project activities comply with applicable standards, specifications, legislation and organisational requirements
