Qualifications

Job description

A leading turnkey engineering solutions company located in Saxenburg Park, Cape Town, is seeking to appoint a skilled and motivated Project Engineer - Mechanical to join its technical team.

The position is suited to an engineer who enjoys combining technical engineering with practical project delivery and who is comfortable working in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.

The successful candidate will be involved in the design, coordination, implementation and commissioning of mechanical engineering systems, particularly within data centre, critical infrastructure and building-services environments.

The role requires a practical problem-solving approach, the ability to manage multiple priorities and the confidence to coordinate internal teams, contractors, suppliers and clients. The candidate should be comfortable undertaking site inspections, investigations, commissioning activities and other site-based engineering duties where required.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will take ownership of assigned projects within the mechanical engineering discipline and will coordinate closely with other engineering disciplines, contractors, suppliers and clients to ensure successful delivery from concept through to commissioning and handover.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Applying sound mechanical engineering principles in the planning, design and execution of projects.
  • Developing engineering concepts, calculations, equipment selections, specifications and material selections appropriate to the project requirements.
  • Preparing and reviewing mechanical engineering designs, drawings, schedules, specifications and technical documentation.
  • Evaluating project variables including site conditions, constructability, logistics, programme, resources, environmental conditions and operational requirements.
  • Conducting site inspections, surveys, condition assessments and technical audits.
  • Coordinating mechanical engineering requirements with electrical, structural, fire, controls and other engineering disciplines.
  • Leading and coordinating internal project teams and providing clear technical direction where required.
  • Managing and coordinating contractors, subcontractors, OEMs, suppliers and specialist service providers.
  • Reviewing contractor and supplier submissions for technical compliance with project requirements.
  • Preparing and maintaining project plans, programmes, progress tracking and technical deliverables.
  • Monitoring project costs and assisting with project budgeting, procurement, tendering/quotations and technical evaluations.
  • Overseeing quality assurance and quality control to ensure installation work complies with approved designs, specifications and applicable standards.
  • Identifying technical and project risks and implementing appropriate mitigation measures.
  • Participating in testing, commissioning, performance verification and project handover.
  • Compiling and managing project documentation, including inspection records, commissioning documentation, as-built information and handover packs.
  • Providing technical support to clients and internal project teams throughout the project lifecycle.
TECHNICAL AREAS:

The role will involve working across a range of mechanical and multidisciplinary systems, particularly within data centre and critical infrastructure environments.

  • HVAC and precision cooling systems.
  • Comfort air-conditioning systems.
  • Ventilation and mechanical extract systems.
  • Refrigeration and refrigerant piping systems.
  • Chilled-water and other hydronic systems.
  • Mechanical plant and equipment.
  • Pumps, piping, valves and associated mechanical services.
  • Generator mechanical systems and associated ventilation, cooling and fuel systems.
  • Fire suppression systems.
  • Diesel fuel storage, transfer and distribution systems.
  • Mechanical aspects of renewable-energy and energy-storage installations.
  • Building Management System (BMS) interfaces associated with mechanical plant.
  • Mechanical equipment controls and monitoring requirements.
  • Site audits, condition assessments and investigations.
  • Testing and commissioning of mechanical systems.
The Project Engineer will also be required to coordinate interfaces with systems such as:
  • Electrical power distribution.
  • Generators and standby-power systems.
  • UPS and energy-storage systems.
  • Fire detection systems.
  • BMS and control systems.
  • Access control, CCTV and other electronic systems.
  • Structural and architectural works associated with mechanical installations.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

BEng, BEngTech or BTech in Mechanical Engineering, or an equivalent recognised engineering qualification. Sound understanding of mechanical engineering principles and practical installation requirements. Experience with HVAC, ventilation, cooling and/or mechanical building-services systems. Ability to interpret and review engineering drawings, specifications, equipment data and technical documentation. Strong technical aptitude and problem-solving ability. Good computer literacy, including strong Microsoft Excel proficiency. Ability to work independently, take initiative and manage multiple projects or workstreams. Strong organisational and communication skills with the ability to meet project deadlines. Valid Code B driver''''s licence. Willingness and ability to undertake site inspections and site-based project activities. At least two contactable professional references.

ADVANTAGEOUS:

Professional registration with ECSA, or demonstrated progress towards professional registration, will be advantageous. Experience within data centres, telecommunications facilities or other mission-critical infrastructure. Experience with precision cooling systems. Experience with fire suppression, generator fuel systems or other specialist mechanical systems. Experience with Revit, AutoCAD and/or other engineering design software. Experience with commissioning and performance testing of mechanical installations. Experience working in multidisciplinary mechanical/electrical project environments.
