Job summary

The South African Breweries is seeking an experienced process artisan to run the pilot malting plant and micro-brewery. You will perform production operations, execute quality checks, record data, and ensure safety and housekeeping standards while supporting the team to minimise downtime.

Responsibilities include process control, maintenance participation, waste trend analysis, and rapid response to production issues. Malting/brewing experience is a plus, but not required.

Qualifications

  • Minimum N4 Electrical/Millwright qualification.
  • Trade test qualification in Electrical/Millwright.
  • PC literacy.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Malting and brewing experience would be an advantage.
  • Experience in a Process Control Environment would be an advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the micro-brewery and pilot malting plant according to the instructions.
  • Perform quality checks and document results (in process analyses and brewery quality analyses).
  • Record waste on documentation and review trends to identify problems.
  • Monitor process performance against targets and complete short interval control documentation.
  • Respond rapidly to triggers that cause stoppages.
  • Follow problem-solving practices as documented.
  • Perform housekeeping and apply 5S and safe-work practices.
  • Identify and correct unsafe practices.
  • Assist team members in their tasks.

Job description

The processing plant artisan’s key functions will be to ensure the optimal running of the pilot malting plant and micro-brewery. Reducing breakdowns and perform preventative maintenance. This individual will be responsible for operation of the various production areas and in process checks. This individual will work closely with the processing plant operator.

Key Roles & Responsibilities:
Operational requirements:
  • Operating the process area according to the work instructions and adhering to usage standards (Operation of micro-brewery & pilot malting plant).
  • Carrying out the required quality checks as described in the quality control and analysis work practice (In process analyses and brewery quality analyses).
  • Recording waste on the appropriate documentation or information systems and reviewing waste trends to identify problems or opportunities timeously.
  • Constantly reviewing process performance against target and completing all short interval control documentation.
  • Responding rapidly to upstream or downstream triggers that result in stoppages.
  • Appropriate problem-solving approaches, as detailed in the problem-solving work practice must be followed.
  • Performing housekeeping tasks, applying 5s principles and following safe work practices.
  • Unsafe work practices must be identified and corrected.
  • Assisting fellow team members in the execution of their tasks.
Maintenance of Plant and Equipment:
  • Carrying out routine maintenance activities according to the maintenance schedule.
  • Taking part in maintenance and cleaning days.
  • Monitoring trends when conducting routine maintenance.
  • Where production does not meet quality standards the process artisan must try to identify and resolve problems using the appropriate techniques.
Problem Solving:
  • Effective problem solving (e.g. 5y, quick fix routines etc.).
  • Continuous Improvement Using run/control charts and trend analysis, to identify sources of waste and variation in the process.
Technical Knowledge & Skills:
  • Demonstrated and proven technical knowledge of electrical standards and be able to read electrical schematic drawings.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Minimum N4 Electrical/Millwright
  • Trade test qualification in Electrical/ millwright
  • PC literacy
  • Valid driver's license
  • Malting and brewing experience would be an advantage but not required.
  • Prior experience in a Process Control Environment would be an advantage but not required.
