Placements24 is seeking a Principal Exploration Geologist to lead new venture initiatives from Centurion, Gauteng. You will identify and advance promising mineral deposits, design and manage exploration programs, and assess economic viability across diverse commodities.

The role requires extensive grassroots exploration experience, strong 3D modeling and GIS skills, and a proven track record in discovery, with the ability to manage budgets, timelines, and multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications

• Master’s or PhD in Geology or Economic Geology.
• 12+ years of progressive mineral exploration experience, with grassroots focus.
• Proven track record of discovering and advancing deposits (gold, base metals, PGMs).
• Experience in 3D geological modeling software (e.g., Leapfrog, Vulcan) and GIS.
• Strong knowledge of exploration techniques including geophysics, geochemistry, and remote sensing.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Experience managing budgets, timelines, and field teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead the identification and evaluation of new mineral exploration opportunities using geological, geochemical, and geophysical data.
• Design, implement, and manage comprehensive exploration programs including drilling, sampling, and assaying.
• Conduct geological mapping, structural analysis, and 3D modeling to define drill targets and interpret resource potential.
• Review and interpret exploration data ensuring data quality and consistency.
• Prepare technical reports, presentations, and proposals for management and JV partners.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the identification and evaluation of new mineral exploration opportunities, utilizing geological, geochemical, and geophysical data.

• Conduct detailed geological mapping, structural analysis, and 3D geological modeling to define drill targets and interpret resource potential.
• Critically review and interpret exploration data from various sources, ensuring data quality and geological consistency.

• Manage exploration budgets and timelines effectively, ensuring efficient deployment of resources.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, including government agencies, landowners, and joint venture partners.
• Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior geologists and field teams.
• Stay abreast of the latest exploration technologies and best practices in mineral exploration.
• Conduct field-based geological assessments and site visits as required, including travel within Centurion, Gauteng and beyond.

Requirements

• A Master's degree or PhD in Geology or Economic Geology.
• A minimum of 12 years of progressive experience in mineral exploration geology, with a strong emphasis on grassroots exploration and new venture identification.
• Proven track record of discovering and advancing mineral deposits (e.g., gold, base metals, PGMs).
• Expertise in 3D geological modeling software (e.g., Leapfrog, Vulcan) and GIS.
• Strong understanding of various exploration techniques, including geophysics, geochemistry, and remote sensing.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
• Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, timelines, and field teams effectively.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with excellent presentation abilities.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Valid driver's license and willingness to undertake extensive travel for fieldwork.
• Experience in the geological setting of Gauteng is advantageous.
