About the Role

Our client, a prominent player in the mining sector , is seeking a highly experienced and visionary Lead Exploration Geologist to spearhead their exploration initiatives in the vibrant region of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal . This is a critical role responsible for identifying and evaluating new mineral resource opportunities. The successful candidate will lead a team of geologists and geoscientists, driving the geological exploration strategy from conceptualization through to resource definition. This role involves a blend of office-based work and field exploration, offering a dynamic and challenging career path. You will be instrumental in shaping the future growth of our client's mineral assets, utilizing advanced geological modeling and exploration techniques.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement comprehensive exploration programs for various commodities, including base metals and precious metals.
• Manage and mentor a team of geologists, field technicians, and support staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performing environment.
• Oversee geological data acquisition, including core logging, geochemical sampling, and geophysical surveys.
• Interpret geological, geochemical, and geophysical data to define drilling targets and understand mineralizing systems.
• Conduct geological modeling using industry-standard software (e.g., Leapfrog, Vulcan, Surpac) to estimate mineral resources.
• Manage exploration budgets and ensure efficient allocation of resources.
• Liaise with senior management, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies regarding exploration activities and results.
• Ensure all exploration activities are conducted in compliance with safety, environmental, and industry best practices.
• Contribute to the strategic planning and business development of the exploration department.

Requirements

• A Master's degree or PhD in Geology, Economic Geology, or a related geoscience discipline.
• A minimum of 10-12 years of experience in mineral exploration, with a proven track record of discovering significant mineral deposits.
• Extensive experience with various exploration techniques and commodities relevant to South African geology.
• Demonstrated leadership experience in managing exploration teams and projects.
• Proficiency in 3D geological modeling and resource estimation software.
• Excellent understanding of structural geology, mineralogy, and geochemistry.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Superior communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
• Willingness to travel to remote field sites as required.
• Professional Geoscientist (Pr. Sci. Nat.) registration is advantageous.
