Job summary

Department of Health in Gauteng seeks a Transport Attendant to move patients within the hospital, assist with offloading from ambulances, and ensure patient safety. The role includes cleaning equipment and assisting with mortuary-related tasks, while rotating across departments as required.

Responsibilities

• Transport patients between service points, wards and clinical areas.
• Assist in offloading patients from ambulances and private vehicles to wheelchairs or stretchers; ensure patient safety.
• Clean stretchers and wheelchairs after use; transport corpses to mortuary; maintain mortuary register.
• Report faulty equipment; ensure equipment is readily available and stored properly.
• Participate in mortuary administration procedures and adhere to protocols when dealing with the public and bereaved families.
• Perform any other duties as delegated by the supervisor.

Requirements

• A minimum of a Grade 10 or an equivalent qualification. The ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Experience in a clinical/ hospital environment will be an added advantage. Be willing to work shifts, that includes night shift, weekends and public holidays. Rotate in different departments according to operational needs and requirements. Be physically fit to perform tasks such as lifting patients from beds or benches and wheelchairs. Good communication skills, good telephone etiquette and have the ability to maintain confidentiality. Basic understanding of safety and hygiene principles.

Duties

• Responsible for transporting patients from different service points to clinical areas and wards within the hospital. Assist in offloading patients from ambulances and private vehicles to the wheelchairs/ stretchers. Ensure patient safety when transporting them. Cleaning of stretchers and wheelchairs at all times after use. Transporting corpses from the wards to the mortuary. Ensure accurate completion of the mortuary register. Reporting faulty equipment to the supervisor for repairs and ensure that they are stored properly. Participate in administrative procedures of the mortuary and to adhere to correct protocols when dealing with the public and the bereaved families. Ensure that equipment is readily available for use at all times. Perform any other duties delegated by the supervisor.

• Candidates in possession of a foreign qualification will be required to furnish the Department with an evaluation certificate from the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
