Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a skilled Plant Mechanic to maintain and repair a fleet of heavy construction equipment at our Mahikeng workshop and on project sites around the North West. You will diagnose, repair, and service machinery, ensuring high uptime, safety, and compliance with standards.

Ideal candidates have 5+ years of hands-on experience, strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics and electrical systems, and proficiency with diagnostic tools. Travel to sites may be required.

Qualifications

• Trade qualification required as Diesel/Plant Mechanic or equivalent.
• Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience with heavy construction equipment.
• Proficiency with diagnostics, hydraulics, diesel engines and powertrain knowledge.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic and electrical issues on heavy construction equipment.
• Repair and service excavators, bulldozers, graders, loaders and rollers.
• Perform preventive maintenance to maximize equipment uptime and longevity.
• Overhaul and rebuild engines, transmissions and hydraulic systems.
• Read manuals, blueprints and schematics to guide repairs.
• Use diagnostic tools to test equipment and verify repairs.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records and service history.
• Ensure compliance with safety regulations and company standards.
• Source and manage spare parts inventory as required.
• Respond to urgent breakdowns on site or at the workshop.

About the Role

A leading civil engineering and construction company requires a skilled and experienced Plant Mechanic specializing in heavy equipment maintenance and repair . This position is based at their workshop facility and services various project sites around Mahikeng, North West . The successful candidate will be responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a fleet of heavy construction machinery, ensuring minimal downtime and optimal operational performance. This role demands strong diagnostic skills, proficiency with specialized tools, and a comprehensive understanding of hydraulics, diesel engines, and electrical systems specific to heavy plant machinery. This is a critical role supporting the company's extensive operations in the North West province.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform diagnostic testing to identify mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues in heavy construction equipment.
• Repair and service a wide range of heavy plant machinery, including excavators, bulldozers, graders, loaders, and rollers.
• Conduct routine preventive maintenance to ensure equipment reliability and longevity.
• Overhaul and rebuild engines, transmissions, and hydraulic systems.
• Interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics to guide repair and maintenance procedures.
• Operate diagnostic equipment and tools effectively.
• Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair work performed.
• Ensure all work complies with safety regulations and company standards.
• Source and manage spare parts inventory as required.
• Respond to urgent breakdowns on site or at the workshop as needed.

Requirements

• Trade qualification as a Diesel Mechanic, Plant Mechanic, or equivalent relevant certification.
• Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience maintaining and repairing heavy construction equipment.
• Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and powertrain components.
• Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and equipment for heavy machinery.
• Ability to read and understand technical manuals and schematics.
• Valid driver's license (Code 10/EC preferred) and willingness to travel to project sites when necessary.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a maintenance team.
• Knowledge of safety procedures related to heavy equipment maintenance.
• Experience with CAT, Komatsu, Bell, or similar heavy equipment brands is an advantage.
