Placements24 is seeking a Mobile Plant Mechanic for field-based service in Bloemfontein. The role focuses on maintenance, repair and servicing of heavy earthmoving equipment such as excavators, loaders, bulldozers and dump trucks to ensure peak performance and safety.

The ideal candidate has a minimum of 4 years’ experience with diesel engines, hydraulics and electrical systems, and holds a valid Code 10/EB driving license. Travel across the Free State may be required.

Qualifications

• Qualified Artisan Mechanic with relevant trade certification.
• 4+ years' experience in heavy earthmoving or construction equipment.
• Proficient in diagnosing and repairing diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics and electrical systems.
• Experience with CAT, Komatsu, Volvo brands preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Valid Code 10/EB driver's license.
• Willingness to travel within Bloemfontein region.

About the Role

Our client, a major player in the mining and construction equipment sector, is seeking a skilled Mobile Plant Mechanic to join their dedicated service team based in Bloemfontein . This role is essential for the maintenance, repair, and servicing of a diverse fleet of heavy earthmoving equipment, including excavators, loaders, bulldozers, and dump trucks. You will be responsible for ensuring that all machinery operates at peak performance and safety standards, minimizing operational downtime for clients. The ideal candidate is a hands-on mechanic with a strong understanding of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical components common in heavy machinery. This is a field-based position requiring mobility and the ability to work effectively in various site conditions across the Free State province.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive diagnostics and repairs on heavy earthmoving equipment, including mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
• Conduct routine preventative maintenance tasks to ensure optimal equipment performance and longevity.
• Troubleshoot complex mechanical issues and identify root causes for effective repair.
• Overhaul and replace major components such as engines, transmissions, and hydraulic pumps.
• Utilize specialized tools and diagnostic equipment to identify and resolve faults.
• Interpret technical manuals, schematics, and repair guides.
• Maintain accurate service records and report on work completed and parts used.
• Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and company policies while performing duties.
• Respond to urgent service calls and breakdowns efficiently to minimize equipment downtime.
• Provide technical advice and support to operators and site personnel as needed.

Requirements

• Qualified Artisan Mechanic (e.g., Diesel Mechanic, Earthmoving Equipment Mechanic) with relevant trade certification.
• Minimum of 4 years of experience specializing in the maintenance and repair of heavy earthmoving or construction equipment.
• Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems of heavy machinery.
• Experience with major equipment brands (e.g., CAT, Komatsu, Volvo) is highly desirable.
• Ability to read and understand technical manuals and schematics.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in challenging environments.
• Valid driver's license (Code 10/EB) is essential.
