Job summary

Department of Health in South Africa is seeking a Pharmacist (Grade 1) to join the team under the Gauteng Province. The role requires registration with SAPC and robust knowledge of Pharmacy Acts, PFMA, and GPP. You will support clinical ward rounds, stewardship activities, and supervise junior staff.

Qualifications

• Registration with SAPC as Pharmacist (Grade 1, no experience required after registration).
• Sound knowledge of Pharmacy Act, Medicines and Related Substances Act, PFMA, and GPP.
• Understanding of STGs and Essential Drug List.
• Knowledge of hospital pharmacy services, procurement, and inventory systems.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, supervisory, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work under pressure within a multidisciplinary team.
• Computer literacy and pharmacy software knowledge.

Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care in line with legal requirements and departmental standards.
• Dispense and issue medicines accurately and counsel patients and staff.
• Participate in clinical ward rounds, PTC, and Antimicrobial Stewardship activities.
• Manage stock levels to ensure availability of essential medicines.
• Supervise and mentor interns, graduates, and assistants.
• Contribute to training, quality assurance, and medicine use evaluation.
• Uphold GPP and maintain high ethical and professional standards.

Requirements :

• Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a Pharmacist Registration with SAPC for 2026. Grade 1: No experience required after registration as a pharmacist. Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies: Sound knowledge of the Pharmacy Act, Medicines and Related Substances Act, Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), and Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP). Understanding of Standard Treatment Guidelines (STGs) and the Essential Drug List. Knowledge of hospital pharmaceutical services, procurement processes, and inventory management systems. Excellent communication, interpersonal, supervisory, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work under pressure and within a multidisciplinary healthcare team. Computer literacy and knowledge of RX Solution or other pharmaceutical systems.

Duties :

• Ensure the provision of comprehensive pharmaceutical care in accordance with legal requirements and departmental standards. Dispense and issue medicines accurately and efficiently. Provide medication counseling and drug information to patients and healthcare professionals. Participate in clinical ward rounds, Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee (PTC), and Antimicrobial Stewardship activities. Manage and monitor medicine stock levels to ensure continuous availability of essential medicines. Supervise and mentor community service pharmacists, interns, and pharmacist assistants. Contribute to training, quality assurance, and medicine use evaluation programs. Uphold GPP and maintain high ethical and professional standards.
