Position Overview

The Payroll Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the accurate and timely processing of payroll for all employees, ensuring full compliance with South African labor legislation and statutory requirements. This role leads payroll operations, supervises payroll staff, and serves as the primary point of contact for all payroll-related matters.

Key Responsibilities
Payroll Processing & Operations
  • Supervise and coordinate all payroll processing activities across the organization
  • Ensure accurate calculation of wages, salaries, bonuses, commissions, and statutory deductions
  • Verify and validate timekeeping data and work records for completeness and accuracy
  • Process payroll adjustments, new hires, terminations, and employee status changes
  • Oversee direct deposit processes and payroll payment distribution
Compliance & Regulatory
  • Ensure full compliance with South African labor laws, PAYE, UIF, SDL, and related tax regulations
  • Prepare, review, and submit statutory returns and reports (EMP201, IRP5/IT3(a) reconciliations, etc.)
  • Maintain accurate payroll records in compliance with POPIA (Protection of Personal Information Act)
  • Manage pension, provident fund, and medical aid deductions and submissions
Reporting & Analysis
  • Prepare and present monthly payroll reports for management
  • Conduct payroll reconciliations and account analyses
  • Generate reports on employee compensation, leave, and deductions
  • Identify, investigate, and resolve payroll discrepancies
Employee & Stakeholder Support
  • Respond to employee payroll queries promptly and professionally
  • Investigate and resolve payroll-related issues and concerns
  • Act as a key liaison between employees, HR, and Finance teams
Required Qualifications
Education
  • Diploma or Degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or a related field
  • Payroll certification (e.g., CPP, CIPP) is advantageous
Experience
  • 3–5 years of hands‑on payroll experience
  • 1–2 years in a supervisory or team‑lead payroll role
  • Experience processing payroll for 250+ employees preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of South African payroll legislation and tax laws
Technical Skills
  • Proficiency in payroll systems (VIP Payroll, Sage 300, SAP, or similar)
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Experience with payroll systems and HRIS platforms
