Job summary

Emeris Newlands, Cape Town Campus seeks outstanding Independent Contractor Lecturers to strengthen the teaching and learning capacity in the School of Engineering for the BEng Civil for the 2026 academic year.

Roles cover Geotechnical Engineering, Rural/Urban Infrastructure, Structural Engineering, Water Engineering, Materials, Civil Engineering Design, Society and Practice, Engineering Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Lectures are on-campus, part-time (08:00–18:00), 2–3 days/week.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline (or current registration) required.
• 2 years’ lecturing experience in a similar higher education role is required.
• Experience with e-learning platforms such as Blackboard and Moodle is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Preparation, conducting of lectures, tutorials, workshops and seminars.
• Providing study guidance, learning support, consultation and mentoring of students.
• Development of module materials, including online and web-based resources.
• Marking and grading of student assessments.
• Module coordination and quality assurance.

Emeris Newlands, Cape Town Campus is seeking outstanding Independent Contractor Lecturers to strengthen the teaching and learning capacity in the School of Engineering for Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering – BEng Civil in the following discipline for the 2026 academic year:

Semester 1

• Geotechnical Engineering
• Rural and Urban Infrastructure (Transport/ Road Engineering/ infrastructure planning and design, including waste management)
• Structural Engineering (design, includes Prokon)
• Water Engineering (includes software such as EPANET)
• Engineering Materials
• Civil Engineering Design (incudes concepts of engineering design, professional communication, introduction to software such as AutoCAD)
• Society and Practice (includes Engineering History, Project Management, Economics, Professionalism & Leadership, Sustainability)
• Engineering Chemistry
• Engineering Physics
• Engineering Mathematics

Key Performance Areas

• Preparation, conducting of lectures, tutorials, workshops, and seminars;
• Providing study guidance, learning support, consultation and mentoring of students;
• Initiation and development of module materials, including on-line and web-based materials;
• Marking and grading of student assessments;
• Module coordination and quality assurance;
• A range of administrative functions connected to the discipline and modules being taught;
• Involvement in relevant committees, workshops, task groups and other activities;
• Other duties commensurate to the position as required.

Other Job Requirements

• Demonstrated capability to lecture, conduct tutorials and seminars at tertiary level in an effective manner in the core courses stipulated at the highest academic level;
• Expertise in e-learning programs such as Blackboard and Moodle;
• Up-to-date knowledge of curriculum areas being taught at the highest academic level;
• Demonstrated capacity to design, set and evaluate assessments at the appropriate level for the courses stipulated;
• High level of communication skills in verbal, written and electronic modes; and
• Proven high-level administrative abilities.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

• Master’s degree in the specified discipline/s or studying towards a Master’s degree (proof of registration will be required)

Minimum Work Experience Requirements

• 2 years’ lecturing experience in a similar higher education role at a tertiary institution.

Working Conditions

• Please note that this is an Independent Contractor role
• Positions are part-time, with lectures taking place between 08:00 and 18:00.
• Must reside in Cape Town (All classes presented on-Campus)
