Job summary

The Department of Health in Gauteng is seeking an Optometrist with ocular diagnostic privilege to render eyecare services in a tertiary hospital setting, in accordance with HPCSA registration requirements.

The successful candidate will examine, diagnose and treat eye conditions, support eye health promotion, maintain records, assist with budget and asset management, and work as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 with qualification for HPCSA registration as an Optometrist.
  • Independent HPCSA registration and current HPCSA registration.
  • Competencies: communication, report writing, data analysis, patient care, equipment management, computer skills.

Responsibilities

  • Rendering eyecare services in a tertiary hospital setting per Optometry scope.
  • Examine, diagnose and treat eye conditions per scope of practice.
  • Coordinate eye health promotion events and maintain records.
  • Assist with budget control and asset management, ensure safe use of consumables and equipment.
  • Implement quality assurance audits and adhere to Batho Pele principles and patients' rights charter.
  • Work with a multi-disciplinary team and participate in training, research and CPD.

Requirements
  • Grade 12 with appropriate qualification that allows for the required registration with the Health Professionals Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Optometrist with Ocular diagnostic Privilege. HPCSA registration as an independent Practitioner and Current registration with HPCSA. Competencies: Communication skills, report writing, analysis of data, patient care, technical skills (management of optometry equipment), computer skills.
Duties
  • Rendering of Eyecare Services in a tertiary hospital setting in adherence to the scope of practice and health protocols. Examination, diagnosing and treatment of eye conditions as per Optometry scope of practice. Co-ordinate and ensure eye health promotion events. Record keeping, data collection, assist with budget control and asset management. Exercise safeguarding of all consumables and equipment. Implement and maintain Quality Assurance Audits at facility level, Knowledge of Batho Pele Principles, Patients right charter, Ideal hospital framework and other relevant policies and regulations. Adherence to performance and management system. Contribute and participate in continuous professional development activities. Work as part of multi-disciplinary team to deliver better service delivery. Collaborate with stakeholders in Eye care service delivery. Participating in student training and supervision. Participate in research projects. Communicate effectively within the team. Perform any other duties as delegated by the supervisor.
