Job summary

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) invites applications for an Internship: Earth Observation for Ocean Applications. This twelve-month contract is based in Cape Town and offers hands-on experience in geospatial, machine-learning and remote sensing related to ocean science.

You will conduct research on marine plastics detection, preprocess satellite data, develop ML models for marine debris in the SA EEZ, and contribute to peer-reviewed publications.

Qualifications

• Honours degree in geoinformatics, geomatics, or related field.
• Experience with Earth observation image processing and ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch).
• Good communication and ability to work with a team.

Responsibilities

• Conduct research on marine plastics detection using earth observation techniques.
• Preprocess satellite data and perform analysis.
• Develop, test and validate methods for marine debris detection in the SA EEZ.
• Develop machine learning models for marine debris detection using earth observation.
• Contribute to research articles for peer-reviewed publications.
