Job summary

Herotel Telecoms (Pty) Ltd in Tshwane is seeking a senior Network Infrastructure Specialist to plan, install, commission and quality assure builds at fibre POPs, large towers and data centres.

The role requires precise, safety-conscious expertise across fibre, wireless and power systems, with a track record of first-time-right delivery in high-availability environments. You will work after hours as needed and contribute to root cause analyses for improvements.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12
  • Working at Heights and Fall Arrest, First Aid, Fire Fighting and Electrical certification
  • 5+ years of experience as a senior field technician across fibre, microwave and DC power in POPs, towers or data centres
  • Proven delivery of carrier grade equipment, large optical plant builds, and 48V DC/3 phase AC systems with generator and solar interfacing
  • Strong documentation skills covering cable routing, labelling, rack elevations, patching plans and asset updates
  • Advantageous: certified splicing and OTDR training, tower work on microwave systems, and high availability operations experience
  • Solid understanding of fibre splicing, OTDR testing, cleanliness and inspection standards, MPO connections and loss budgets
  • Working knowledge of microwave planning and alignment, spectrum analysis and weatherproofing
  • Familiarity with 3 phase AC basics, DC plant sizing and autonomy, battery safety, earthing/bonding, surge protection and generator alarm integration
  • Networking knowhow across L1/L2 patching, optics selection (SR/LR/ER/ZR, DWDM/CWDM) and basic router/switch turn up
  • Precision, diligence and ownership, with a first time right mindset
  • Willingness to work after hours and late nights when required
  • Structured troubleshooting ability under SLA pressure
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence without authority and a willingness to share knowledge
  • A valid driver's licence
  • Readiness for after hours standby and travel
  • Medical fitness for working at heights and manual handling

Responsibilities

  • Review scopes of work, drawings, bills of materials and risks to produce task plans and pre install checklists
  • Rack and stack carrier grade equipment, and build optical plants including cassettes, trays and splice closures
  • Manage MPO connections, patch optics and label according to standards
  • Test fibre using OTDR and inspection tools, documenting losses and end face images
  • Commission rectifiers, 48V DC plants, battery stacks, A/B feeds and 3 phase AC distribution
  • Perform generator start and stop tests and alarm tests, and set up basic DC cooling for small POPs and data centres
  • Apply installation standards covering torque specs, bend radius, cable routing, labelling and earthing/lightning protection
  • Run link and service tests, power failover and alarm tests, and compile photo logs and OTDR traces
  • Update asset registers, patch schedules, rack elevations and ticketing systems
  • Perform advanced fault isolation across optical, RF and power systems, restoring services within SLA
  • Contribute to root cause analyses and standards improvements alongside the NOC and Project teams

Are you a senior, hands on field specialist with deep technical expertise across fibre, wireless and power systems? Join our Networks team as a Network Infrastructure Specialist in Tshwane, where you'll plan, install, commission and quality assure builds at fibre POPs, large towers and data centres.
