Job summary

The Strategic Mine Closure Planner at BHP Billiton in Johannesburg leads the development and execution of closure plans for South Africa assets, coordinating with regulators, communities and internal teams to meet legal and environmental standards.

This role requires a Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or related field, 5–8 years of experience, strong project management and stakeholder engagement skills, and the ability to deliver closure solutions that unlock post-closure land use

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Environmental Science, Geology, or related field.
• Advanced qualifications (Master’s or certs in environmental management) are assets.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain detailed mine closure plans aligned with SA mining legislation and internal policies.
• Conduct environmental impact assessments, risk analyses, and cost-benefit studies to inform closure decisions.
• Engage with local communities, NGOs, and government agencies for transparent planning.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary teams across closure lifecycle.
• Monitor closure progress and report against timelines and budgets.
• Prepare regulatory documentation to meet DMRE requirements.
