About the Role

Our client, a leader in naval architecture and marine engineering solutions, is seeking a dedicated Mechanical Design Engineer to join their team in Mossel Bay, Western Cape . This role focuses on the design and development of intricate mechanical systems for a variety of marine vessels and offshore structures. The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles and a passion for applying these to the unique challenges of the maritime industry. You will be involved in all phases of the design process, from conceptualization and detailed drafting to performance analysis and integration with other ship systems. We are looking for an individual who can contribute to innovative designs, ensuring safety, efficiency, and compliance with stringent maritime regulations. This position requires a hands‑on approach and close collaboration with naval architects, electrical engineers, and manufacturing teams to bring complex marine projects to fruition in our Mossel Bay facility.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and document mechanical systems for marine applications, including propulsion, piping, HVAC, and auxiliary systems.
• Utilize CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, ShipConstructor) for detailed design and drafting.
• Perform calculations and simulations for stress analysis, fluid dynamics, and thermal performance of marine mechanical components.
• Collaborate with naval architects and other engineering disciplines to ensure integrated system design.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant maritime classification society rules (e.g., DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register) and international standards.
• Support the procurement process by preparing specifications for mechanical equipment and materials.
• Oversee mechanical aspects during vessel construction and commissioning phases.
• Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical design issues encountered during build or in service.
• Contribute to design reviews, providing technical input and ensuring design integrity.
• Maintain technical documentation and drawings for marine mechanical systems.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical design, with specific experience in marine or offshore engineering preferred.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD software and an understanding of shipbuilding processes.
• Knowledge of maritime regulations, classification society rules, and international maritime standards.
• Familiarity with marine propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, and piping systems.
