Job Description:
Compliance & Safety (Legal Requirements)
- Ensure all work is conducted in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (85 of 1993) and its regulations.
- Adhere to lock-out, tag-out, try out (LOTOTO), permit-to-work, confined space, and working-at-heights and live electrical work procedures.
- Identify and report unsafe conditions, near misses, and incidents in line with company and statutory requirements.
- Participate in risk assessments, toolbox talks, and safety audits as required by South African safety legislation.
- Always ensure that the correct Personal Protective Equipment is work as per risk assessments and job standards.
- Perform statutory inspections on all prescribed and indicated equipment and building structures as indicated by the Maintenance Superintendent.
- Immediately inform the maintenance management team if any equipment in the plant is seen to be defective.
- Compliance with company disciplinary, safety, and quality procedures
Mechanical & Electrical Maintenance
- Perform planned, preventative, and breakdown maintenance on mechanical and electromechanical equipment, including gearboxes, conveyors, pumps, motors, valves, bearings, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Diagnose faults and carry out repairs on mechanical and basic electrical systems in accordance with engineering standards and OEM specifications.
- Install, align, and commission machinery and equipment.
- Perform vibration checks, alignment, and condition monitoring tasks where required.
- Perform Break-Down Analysis on all Breakdowns exceeding 15 min.
- Maintain hand tools and toolbox to ensure the equipment is in good working condition.
Planned Maintenance & Continuous Improvement
- Execute tasks according to the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) or maintenance schedules.
- Record all maintenance work, inspections, and parts usage accurately.
- Assist with root cause analysis of recurring breakdowns and implement corrective actions
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance equipment reliability and efficiency.
Teamwork & Communication
- Work collaboratively with production, engineering, and other maintenance staff to minimise downtime.
- Provide technical support and guidance to apprentices, assistants, or operators where applicable.
- Communicate clearly during shift handovers and maintenance planning meetings.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Recognised Millwright Trade Test Certificate (Red Seal), as per South African trade certification standards.
- Minimum 1-5 years' post-trade experience in a manufacturing, processing, or industrial environment.
- Matric
- NQF Level 5 with focus on Electrical.
- Minimum 2 years' experience in problem solving of hydraulic and pneumatic systems faults.
- Minimum 3 years' experience mechanical and electrical fault finding.
TRAINING
- Hydraulics - basic level required.
- Pneumatics - basic level required
- Electronics - basis level required
- Blow Molding - basic level required
SKILLS
- Ability to work under pressure and respond to breakdowns effectively.
- Breakdown analysis using problem solving techniques.
- High level of reliability, discipline, and attention to detail.
- Good written and oral communication.
- Problem solving on temperature control circuits
- AC and DC motor connections and testing.
- Start delta wiring
- Hydraulic and pneumatic cylinder repairs.
- Engineering (drilling, tapping, bending, pressing, cutting, arc welding)
- Read, analyse and interpret hydraulic schematics to solve breakdowns
- Read, analyse and interpret pneumatic schematics to solve breakdowns
- Read, analyse and interpret electric schematics to solve breakdowns
- Setup of AC drives.
- Basic arc welding skills
- Conveyor maintenance
- Recognise electrical components
- Testing of input and output signals on PLC controls
- Dismantling, assembling and installing machinery.
- Control circuit testing on pressure and linear transducers.
- Control circuit testing of proportional valves.
- Panel wiring from electrical drawings.
